Ok here's the problem. Both signals work just fine until the outside temp dips down to around 50 degrees. (this has been happening for the past couple years but it's getting worse).

Now that the colder air is here the right signal doesn't work. If you leave it on for a few minutes it generally will then start blinking. If you try it again right away it will work but a few minutes later same problem. During the summer never any problems. It's not the relay as I've tried known good relays.

Any thoughts? I'm hoping it's a contact problem under the covers on the steering column. I opened things up last weekend to have a look and I do see contacts but I didn't have time to try anything, so I'm doing it today.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

I had a similiar problem on an 89. I used some electrical cleaner and q-tips on the contacts around the steering wheel and turn signal switch. Now my signals work fine. Make sure you clean the metal leaf contact between the switch and the steering wheel.

v6lsmonty, thanks for the reply. I had done some claening and went back and cleaned again, stil no go.

Here's an interesting thing. If I take a hair dryer and heat up the area at the steering column, things work great until it cools down. Then if I heat it again all is fine.

weird.

heat makes metal and plastic expand so you must have a gap between the contacts somewhere, It must be really small since its so sensitive to temp. I guess your gonna have to do a little trial and error.

Yes I agree. The unfortunate thing is no amount of pressing, pushing or cleaning makes any difference at all, only heat. So I'm guessing the issue is internal where there isn't much I can do. I really hesitate to take this in for repair $$$, but it may be my only alternative.
