Getting the Wheeling Fever
I'm in the process of putting in some different shackles on my 89 P/U. There appears to be a steel bushing/sleeve in the eye of the rear leaf springs. I can't seem to get them out. I've sprayed with rust penetrater and poured the heat to it with no luck. This bushing does come out doesn't it? It looks like it has to come out in order to get in the aftermarket poly bushings. Any ideas. Thanks

Mike

Steel sleeve is bonded to the rubber bushing. Either leave it in place or remove it. Several removal tricks, one is hydraulic press. Another way to go is to drill a series of holes through the rubber around the sleeve, then remove it and use a hack saw to cut out through the outer sleeve. Hammer a chisel or fat screwdriver blade into the spring eye to open it up then try to hammer out the sleeve and bushing (the same cut is to release the press fit).

Thank goodness I didn't have to remove those, I would have spent another day finding out I don't have the proper tool.
I know my post doesn't help ya, but those bushings in an old truck are a pain no matter what.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I just replaced the rear leafs on my truck and I did what Roger said. I used a 5/16 drill bit to remove it, and then scraped off any rubber that was left on it.

Good luck!

How long did you put heat to it?, with a torch it takes a while, eventually the rubber will melt/catch fire, and you can push the bushing out(sometimes they will fall out on its own). A small hand held propane torch($15 at Kmart) is usually all it takes.

I would plan on replacing the bolt. That sleeve is probably rusted to the bolt and won't let the bolt slide out. I used a sawsall and cut the bolt on each side of the bushing. You can see the bolt inside the sleeve in the pic. Roger sells 18mm bolts that will let you loose the sleeve (after drilling out the spring mount).
