If the rattle is accompanied by your oil light staying on, then you definately have a problem with not enough oil pressure at start up. I doubt it's a worn timing chain. It's likely the timing chain that is rattling and making noise because of low oil pressure.
It's not completely unheard of, to have the timing chain wear out on later model 22REs with less than 100K miles, so don't completely rule it out. While the guides may still be in place and appear fine, the chain itself could be stretched out of spec and will still rattle upon start up.
If the OEM filter doesn't work, try using 10w-30 or 10w-40 as was suggested. If that doesn't work, then you may still need to replace the timing chain in the relatively near future. But the fact that the oil pressure stays on is probably the key to the problem here, which would make it oil filter, oil type, or oil pump related. And the oil pumps are virtually indestructable.

Hum, I have been using 5w30 for my 22re. Given our canadian winter cold, should i go back up to 10w30? What difference does it make anyway? I run 10W30 in the summer and 5W30 in the winter; follow the spec in the book; works fine, but then I have heat pads for my oil pan, battery, and a block heater. We see -50*F; average around -20*-30*F here in the Interior.

That connector which goes to nowhere is for the A/C if you had it. I do have AC. It blows cold driving around town, but seems to shut down after a bunch of miles on the highway. It may be overcharged. Maybe this connector is for a different setup...or is why the AC shuts down? I would check out the maintenance history on that truck as well, may be a little sketchy since you bought it off ebay, but i could be wrong. You are correct. I have no info on the vehicle. Can dealers access the history of dealer-done work? Try changing to 10/30 to eliminate the rattling. This will be my next action. If that doesn't work, I am thinking I need to drop the oil pan to inspect the pickup screen. That's the only way to check the screen? You realy don't need that much lift, you can easily get 3.5 - 4 inches of lift for around 300 bucks. 2 inch body lift, 1.5 inch ball joint spacers for up front, and 2 inch shackles for the rear. Nice looking truck by the way... The truck came with the lift it has. What do you mean too much lift? Is the truck lifted more than 4". The 'Clean' photo is with an absolutely full bed and trailer. So, there is likely another inch to be seen in the rear when she's empty. THANKS.

You can still get the timing chain rattle with everything there and in good shape. One of my trucks has been doing it on start up for the past quarter million miles. Guides are stock oem pieces and in good shape.
The stock 22RE engine just isn't a powerhouse. Not even at sea level on a good day. Stock is something on par of just over a hundred ponies. You can modify them to do well, but stock, they're weak. Perhaps you've got unrealistic expectations for performance.
The white dots don't inherently signify anything that I can tell. I've seen them on brand new vehicles some times. I suspect it's part of an assembly line check-off procedure. And it's done occassionally by someone with a marker so they can be sure they've done it.
Cannot help you with the honk or the wire connector.

Looks like your guide is still there, but the bolt hole may be broken. Mine was still intact (aside from the broken bolt hole), but it could move laterally in the cover (right to left) when looking at it from the angle your pics are at. Did you reach in there and see if it was loose?
I got parts from engnbldr and fixed that up. It still rattles a bit, but I'm guessing its the valves. (Mine has 140k). Wasn't too hard of a job, just time consuming. Good luck.

Did you reach in there and see if it was loose? hmmmm, while I poked at the chain to if there was any slop, I did not check to see if the guides were firmly attached. I wish I had. I will keep this in mind.

Hmm, that electrical connector looks a lot like a fuel injector connector. I've had the entire top half of my motor off, and to me that is what it looks like. It might not be that but check your injectors just to be sure. I don't know about the other sound. It's to bad that the sound doesn't last long enough for you to pinpoint where it is coming from. My cusins truck made a wierd sound so i used a piece of hose and held one end up to my ear and the other around the motor trying to find the sound.

Im not gonna touch the timing chain section of the post..let the other fellars handle it. On the connector...can you get a more detailed shot of the engine compartment...say from the drivers fender...keeping the valve cover in full view but towards the bottom of the pic so that the plenum gets included too? Almost looks like the EGR temp sensor connector to me. Cali smogged 22R-Es have this sensor, and since toyota is one that likes to keep things simple, theres a good chance its part of all harnesses from the later years..and just Cali smoggers have it hooked up. Here is a picture of a Cali-trucks VSV tray...courtesy of Paullie Wallnuts Cherrybunny...mid 90's 22R-E. It is definately a topside connector, VSV, A/C or sensor. ~Darin

Pull back the sleeve from the connector so you can see the color codes of the two wires. One will be black or brown almost guarenteed...but if you get the wire codes than we can nail what its intended to connect to. Otherwise we can spend all weekend guessing and being wrong...which can be fun at times.
