I'll add this to the timing chain issue.I recently replaced my timing chain kit with one from engbldr's kits.My old setup looked fine.No broken guides, truck ran good, but I had a rattle or clicking that I thought was the valves. So I decided I'd replace the rocker assemblies and timing chain at the same time.I was using the old crank gear to rotate the new chain to get the cam gear on.Well, that old cam gear had so much play in it that if you lifted up on it,it would spin off the key on the crank shaft.I also saw where the chain looked like it had been scraping against the block.Like you said, you don't know the history of this truck. My advice would be to not rely on how the guides look but to pull the timing cover off and check it out.Good luck!

I forgot to add that the timing chain assembly I replaced supposedly only had 30k on it!

I'll add that I have an extra plug like you're describing as well. I'm not sure what it goes to, but I verified that all four injectors were plugged up, and I have one of those little dealies with the knob on top of the valve cover. My truck doesn't have AC though.

I just assumed it was something to do with the AC, so I just left it hanging there near the plenum. Truck runs fine.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Thanks to everyone for the input. I bought some Mobil 1 10W30 and have an OEM filter ready to go on. Too bad I'm out of town for the weekend and can't do a thing. I will change the oil Monday night and see what happens. I'd be suprised if I get a fix that easy. I will also check and report on the color of those wires. Fingers crossed. Off to SF to see someone tie to knot.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Aight, I left this post hanging for a while. Partly because I am lazy and partly because I wanted to see how the new oil (Mobil 1 5W30 to Mobil 1 10W30) might change my noisy timing chain (assumption) on cold start ups.

Amazingly, the change in oil weight got rid of my timing chain rattle on start up! I am shocked myself. With a slight drop in ambient temps and the heavier oil, I have NO sound at all. This is great because I don't feel the need to break into the timing chain components. I suppose I should pull the oil pan and check things out - but I ain't gonna do it unless I hear some noise.

Some more on oil weight. I haven't told you all that I was running Mobil 1 0W40 before I ran the 5W30. I am pretty sure (my memory is a bit fuzzy) that the timing chain noise started on this oil. I love the concept of a 0W40 (easy cold starts and protection at high revs and warm engine temps), but I guess it isn't the right oil for these (or my) engines. My 1995 SAAB 900 Turbo runs great on that oil - but that is a different beast. Anyway, I'm a happy camper.

Oh yeah, I have not taken any pics of that mystery connector. Someday! THANKS.
