Dan,

You're talking about 4-cylinder diffs, right? I'm about 99.999% convinced that 4.88s for the 6-cylinders were never imported into the U.S. Quite a few people have said they've had (or at least seen) 4.88s for the 4-cylinders. I may be hitting some junkyards soon, I'll see if I can find any.

Are you sure you don't have some lying around your yard somewhere <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> ?

I actually thought all Gen I 5spds had them. I do know my 89 4dr, 904dr, and 84 all had them. The 93sr Auto was the first Montero I owned with 4:62 instead.

1996 SR From the Area 51 Skunk Works. 37"BFG Tires, 5" lift, Rock Track 4:1 Case, Tom Woods Drive Shafts, Oasis Air, Front ARB, lifted gas tank, T-max winch and lots of stuff that cost too much.

Your '93 should have also had 4.88's, if it was the SR. The SR's didn't get the 4.63's until it got the 3.5L V6 and large rear diff in '94. The LS had 4.62's because they came with smaller tires.

Lloyd says they were, so you must be wrong... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/drunk.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

(I own two Gen I 6-cylinder 5-speeds; they're both 4.625s. Additionally, I've got two diffs out of other Gen I 6-cylinders (I bought them at junkyards to get the LSDs). They're both 4.625, as well. Every Gen I 6-cylinder I've ever seen in a junkyard had 4.625s).

Yes they were............
Just because the US didn't get them doesn't mean they don't exist just like the 5.29's <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />

How would you know what you had in your GenII? I've no idea what mine has...is there some sort of marking on the carriers?
