4.88'S were never offered by Mitsubishi in the Gen-1 V-6. Kary Yes they were............ Just because the US didn't get them doesn't mean they don't exist just like the 5.29's You are quite correct frank. BUT Lloyd said that both his 89 4dr and 90 4dr had them. he has said nothing about having them put in, or getting them from somewhere else. In all of the research that I've done on the diff's, I've never come across a Part number from the USA Mitsubishi system. IF anyone else would like to share a Part # that is for the 4.875 R&P for a GEN-1 in the USA, please do so. It is truely a shame that we don't get the same stuff that the rest of the World does. Kary

I will chime in here. I have had two 5 speeds, and neither had 4.88s. Both had 4.625s, one was a 4 banger and the 2nd was a V6. The LWB doesn't have em either, though I wish it did... I think Powell found them in 84-84 Monteros, but I've yet to ever see 4.88s in a GenI V6 in North America.

It could be both my Gen 4drs had a high altitude package or something, both were bought new in Denver Colorado.(the 89 was stolen)My 93 did indeed have a 4:88, not 4:62 though.

Well I have checked every Montero/Raider that I have ever come across in the salvage yards, And have never seen 4.88 gears. I went looking again today, Did find another 2.6 4.625 LSD. It's not in a salvage yard, This guy deals in scrap metal not parts. So he sells things cheap.Oh I also found an 81 Grand Wagoner at the first yard, bought the Dana 44's axles out from under it. ![[Linked Image]](http://pics.montypics.com/HIGHMTNDESERT/2004-10-08/1097269757_IMG_2375.jpg)
Well on my way to becoming that eccentric old man in every town.(crazy as a s#@thouse rat) With a yard full of desireable old vehicles that tells you, Sorry they're not for sale..... Someday I'm going to fix them.

So Lloyd is right............. All parts are available in the US so they must have been released there at some stage. Gen 1 (2.6) 4.875 front = MB185378 or MB185456 rear = MB527147 Gen 1 (3.0 V6) 4.875 front = MB527147 rear = MB598487 Gen 2 (3.0 V6) front = MB831031 rear = MB598487

My bad! It looks like 4.88s were available on some early 4cyl models too!
BTW, shouldn't this thread be located in Tech?!

I've listed the US part numbers in the specialized part number repository along with the 5.29 part numbers. They consist of a Gen II rear and a Gen I 4 cyl rear to be used in a V6 front.

Frank, how were your 33s on 4.88s? I can't afford 5.29s, but the 4.88s *Could* be reachable down the road. But the change from 4.62s probably wouldn't make any "seat of the pants" difference, would it.
