Sounds like clutch slippage to me. Happens when your flywheels mating surface gets impacted with clutch material and or contaminants. Clutch plate could be glazed to, from slippage. Basically what happens is the sticky "GRIPTION" face of the clutch gets transformed into a surface similar to 1200 grit sandpaper...waxy. My 22RE'd 88' is doing this same thing right now with a 15 month old clutch. high end of 3rd gear sometimes, but mostly in 4th and 5th. Doesnt happen all the time-but enough to warrant me tearing her down and replacing a few things. I do know my Tranny front seal and engine rear main are both seeping...probably the cause.
