Sometimes while accelerating, the engine revs like it's in neutral, meaning that the RPMs go up really fast, but I lose power to the wheels. I have to let off the gas and then the engine will engage power to the wheels again. This has only happened while the truck is already in motion, meaning its not when I'm taking off from a traffic light. I'm taking it to the dealer today to get it checked, but wanted to know if anyone's experienced this on their truck. Thanks.

Did you check your fluid level???

Sounds like clutch slippage to me. Happens when your flywheels mating surface gets impacted with clutch material and or contaminants. Clutch plate could be glazed to, from slippage. Basically what happens is the sticky "GRIPTION" face of the clutch gets transformed into a surface similar to 1200 grit sandpaper...waxy. My 22RE'd 88' is doing this same thing right now with a 15 month old clutch. high end of 3rd gear sometimes, but mostly in 4th and 5th. Doesnt happen all the time-but enough to warrant me tearing her down and replacing a few things. I do know my Tranny front seal and engine rear main are both seeping...probably the cause. Drop the pan, change the filter, and FLUSH the old fluid. If it still slips start looking for another tranny to drop in there. Could be your torque converter but if you're going to rip out the tranny and install a new T-converter, you're probably looking at about as much $ for a good used tranny. Go all the way and get you're confidence back.

PS-I promise to pay better attention from now on.

Bad news for me... dealer says that the transmission is slipping... and I just bought this truck <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="images/icons/frown.gif" /> ! They hooked it up to their computer and were not able to find any problems, but when they took it for a test drive, the mechanic was able to duplicate the problem during highway speeds. I was told that as the weather warms, the tranny will slip more frequently, but I don't remember the reason why - I was still in shock. Dealer will get me pricing on a used transmission on Tuesday.

I don't know much about transmissions, what's the difference between a "used" vs. "rebuilt" one? Can my existing one be fixed? Feel free to give any advise... I'm all ears <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" /> !

Although Im strongly against automatic transmissions...I have seen them on TV!LOL

USED vs. REBUILT
Used transmission is what is in your rig right now. Same goes for the manual transmission in my truck-it has mileage on it, wear and tear etc...USED.
Rebuilt is a USED transmission that has been torn down, had the gears and shafts inspected, and in your case had the bands, valves etc replaced. Tolerences are brought back to as close as new as possible. USED generally comes out of a wrecked vehicle (be careful here) and carry little or no warrranty. Rebuilt might have come from a wreck, but again...has been taken apart-inspected and re-assembled with new parts, bearings and seals. REBUILT will generally carry at least a 12month/1year warranty against defects.

I think the mechanic might be wrong. Before you spend a wad of money on a new tranny,check a few things out. Check the TPS with an ohmeter & spacers between the throttle stop and throttle adjustment screw. Also check tour timing. I think factory specs is 10 degrees before tdc. Try retarding 2 to 5 degrees. Let it warm up real good and set your rpm's at 850 to 900. One last thing, run some 93 octane in it. My truck was doing the same thing. I almost bought a tranny. I did a little tinkering, now it runs great. Hate to see you spend a lot of money needlessy. Good luck. Dave
