Getting the Wheeling Fever
Heyas all!
When I am stopped and in gear my Monty sounds like it's going to fall apart.
If I put it in park or neutral it stops, but back in gear... rattle!!!
It sounds like someone has a tin of nuts & bolts under my truck and is shaking it like crazy. Everything seems tight. (I've checked) I haven't had a chance to go to my mechanic yet, so I am trying to figure out what it is myself. It seems like it's from the lower front of the vehicle.
I have heard that the balancer chain/system on these 2.6's let you know when they are getting tired, but I would think that it would be the same weather in park or in gear... any advice or personal accounts are appreciated!
Harry

I bet it's in the clutch or tranny input or flywheel bolts loose, or bellhousing bolts loose. Find out quick.

naw, can't be- he's got an auto!

Have you checked the bolts that hold the flex plate to the torque converter? I'd pull the inspection plate and see what you can see...

not much help,

I've got the same thing happening on my 88 auto.

Mine turned out to be the exhaust. The support bracket just behind the catalytic convertor rusted loose allowing the catalytic convertor come in contact with the middle crossmember.
It's most noticable at lower RPM's like drive or reverse as opposed to the higher RPM's of neutral or park.

Hope it's that simple in your case.

My camchain was more noticable at idle before it went, I think the offbeat at low revs causes it to slap more. Needless to say, my motor mangled itself about 10 miles up the road after pulling in for fuel and thinking how bad it sounded at tickover waiting in the queue....

Body Damage is Cool
If your chain tensioner pushed in under a load and stuck it will cause you to get a lot of noise. Change your oil, and look for grit in it, (guide material on tensioner).
I also have had to replace two flexplates(auto flywheel)
in mine, take off the inspection cove to the bell housing and wipe your finger inside the bottom of the bellhousing.
also look for metal shavings, that will be the flexplate cracking and rubbing agaist itself causing the shavings.
Usually you will hear a loud scraping noise when starting if it is the flexplate.
