I was counting the time since your avatar changed; once you picked it I figured you were set on course. Ah, heck, I was counting tramsission too. I just assumed it was all out; didn't realize you were still driving it.

Nope, I had the tranny in with plenty of time to spare for Moab (1.5 days...) I've been driving it, but broke reverse in Moab so it's only been to the office and back since then.

You mention HP being more important to your designs than Torque (within reason, of course). Why is your focus on HP? Just a personal preference? Or do you figure with the gearing you have (including the Klune-V) that you have all the low-end torque you need?

Nope, never said HP was MORE important to me than torque, just that I want more of it than the 4.9 has and there's not a lot of upgrade options for that motor. The 3800 is a very torquey motor. It's 240 hp and 280 lb-ft is a better balance I'm looking for, and has huge potential for upgrades. I mention HP numbers for the upgraded 3800 as those are usually what's used for comparison and what I remember. Torque will go up at about the same rate as well, unless you change the cam. A 300 hp 3800sc (done with just an IC and pulley change) is still putting out probably at least 350 lb-ft of torque.

Lack of torque was actually a strike against the twin-turbo 3400. I could make 300 hp with it, but it's questionable if the stock block could handle that for long, and it's torque curve wouldn't be that great for a heavy truck. Nowhere near as flat or high as the 3800sc curve is anyways.

In low range a stock 2.6 is plenty of motor except for the occasional sand hill, or if you like muddin'. This swap is more for all the other time I'm not in low range.

I know I'm bugging you, but I'm trying to learn the the "why's" behind the "what's done."

No, not bugging me, and asking "why" is cool. It gets everything out there and may help others decide for themselves what's best for them.

Sorry, I don't post much , but I couldn't resist. If I may add a few things about the Buick V-6, this motor has been around for decades. They're bullitproof....

Yep. While the 3800 is not exactly the Buick V6 of old, it is a direct descendant that's been continually upgraded and can make some serious power without issues. There are FWD guys making 400 hp to the wheels with this motor on a stock bottom end.

StupidLow(tm).

As in, I overheard you say this once last May:

Houlster: "When I've got it in StupidLow(tm) I can't hold the rig with my brakes."

He he, I believe Randy was the first to use the term long before I did

..and I think I may have inherited it from George. Who knows where he got it.
Us dual-cased folk have low, low-low, and stupid-low(tm).

I look forward to drag-racing our Amigii, Dan... I think I'll get you off the line, but the auto and the boosted HP potential makes me think I'll be chasing your huffed-on Bu-Migo by the end of the quarter. Though there's always room for a bottle.

Sorry, my reply was as about as clear as mud there. But you got the idea, that design has been around for a while. I got to drive a Buick Lesabre FWD with the supercharged V-6, lets just say that I think you may be happy with it in stock form too. (Unless of course your looking to dust off Corvetts at every stop light, which, really, when you think about, it isn't all that bad of an idea either ) Dave

A Wise man once said, Wherever you go........there you are
Bone stock 90 Trooper 2.6, 5 speed. With the aerodynamics of a brick, and the power to match.
2000 Chevy Tracker, also bone stock, well, at least until it's paid off!!!

Looks like it should fit just fine once you get all of the mounting figured out. That 2.6 is a heavy pig of an engine..... any chance you are actually saving weight with the 3.8? Hard to oooh and aaaah too much with it just sitting in there via an engine hoist (but some )..... but you have proven time and time again that your work is top of the line, so I'm sure this will be no different. I will be following the progress for sure

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Dan, I do believe the 3800 SC has the throttle body pointing towards the rear of the block. Are you getting enough clearance between the supercharger and the firewall in your application?

Greg
