1986 Trooper Lock-up Update - Now Engine Rebuild #515553 10/19/04 04:27 PM

The diesel engine is taking shape. Installed the crankshaft and bearings and the timing cover and camshaft. No problems except I could have SWORN I had the wrong crankshaft bearings. I looked for my old bearings - DANG the machine shop threw them away and they NEVER do that. I then called Jerry Lemond, whom I bought the bearings from, to confirm part numbers and he confirmed I had the right bearings. While talking with him, I found the old bearings. Sure enough my new ones were exactly identical to the original bearings that came out of the truck. Here is a list of the ways the bearings seemed wrong:
 • Too narrow for saddle
 • Oil hole doesn't line up completely correctly on #1 saddle
 • Too many oil holes for #5

I have never seen main bearings look so wrong and while I am not the most experienced non-professional out there and have a lot to learn and see, I have rebuilt a dozen or so engines including diesel ag engines so I have handled a few main bearings.

I will keep everyone up to date on my progress. Check out my engine rebuilding photo album

Nice to see you're getting it back together. Only one problem. You're building it upside down. You're going to have another failure, this time due to lack of lube cause the pump can't get oil. Unless of course you use anti-gravity oil, but not the synthetic type, so the motor can break-in properly.

J/k. I hope it works well for you. Keep us posted. I'm particularly interested, as I too have one here that needs rebuilding.

No, I will be using it in Australia so that is why I am having to build it upside down. Anti-gravity oil would be a problem. Oil draining back into the sump rotates clockwise too so I am going to have to reverse the oil pump ....

I love all those nice clean shiny parts going back together.
Makes me want to do mine even though it is running OK. Thanks for the great photos.

May I suggest, if you are going to rebuild it anyway, to shut it off first.

Does the service book contain the info on measuring crank shaft wear, and what, if any, associated oversize bearings need to be used? And the same question for the cylinders. Is there a wear diameter and associated oversize rings to be used?
(In rebuilding the air cooled VW engines this was a big deal)
Thanks.

The Isuzu factory service book does contain everything you need as far as parameters and specifications. You can pick the manual(actually two books in a set) or reprints up on ebay from time to time. Pistons are very hard to come by (Jerry Lemond of this forum had a few sets left) and the only sizes I have seen available from anyone are standard and .5mmOS. I am using the .5mm oversize. There are no oversize bearings due to the type of crankshaft hardness treating("tuftride" chemical treating) so if your crank is worn beyond limits for standard bearings, you just need to get a new crank. Again, tough to come by though....

Zack--

Maybe I could do a quick 'rebuild' on the fly by pouring in some of that 'motor magic' kind of stuff.
