Hi, I just joined the board here at 4x4wire and it is a great site. Just bought an 86/87 Isuzu Trooper diesel, but still have to go pick it up. Has no engine or transmission and wanted to see if anybody here could help me out by selling their possible extra or helping otherwise. Thanks and I appreciate your reply.

Welcome to the Wire! Your post has followed quite a few other folks looking for Isuzu Diesel motors. Just as an FYI, this post would probably be better off in the FOR SALE/WANT TO BY SECTION here on the Wire. (you will get more exposure to the post)

Try Ebay for the motor, a few pop up every now and then. Good Luck!!

I know these engines are dried up and pretty hard to find. I check Ebay daily and still not many come up. I have already located a 5-speed 4WD transmission, but no engine still. I still have to go to many more junkyards.

Just to be certain, you did get the tranny from a diesel right? The gas and diesel bellhousing patterns aren't the same, so if you have a gasser tranny it won't bolt to the diesel you're looking for.

Well I haven't got a transmission for the Trooper yet. I have a 1982 Chevy LUV diesel pickup, so I do know that the gas transmission will not work on the diesel. I'm very educated on the Isuzu diesel in the pickups and Troopers. Like I said, I am in need of a turbo diesel engine and transmission for a diesel Trooper I bought of Ebay. I'm not worried about a transmission because I have located one in PA and one in MD. But the engine is what is rare and hard to get. If you know where I could possibly buy one, please let me know. Thanks.

Need a Spot
Check out Ebay Item #2495250593. It's an 86 TD 4x4 P'up with 87,000 original miles. Everything great except rear frame rails. Located in Southern Maine
Give it a look. Thought it might help.

Roll Me Over
Hi,

Sorry for the cross-post from the Monty site but you might try www.risingsunengines.com in Chico, CA. I'm not affiliated with them but a couple of the Monty members have bought low-mileage Japanese engines from them and have been satisfied. They ship anywhere in the US.

good luck. I want a diesel trooper too!

Body Damage is Cool
I hope you got the Trooper real cheap. Cause the price of a good TD engine and tranny is gonna kill you. You might try Jerry Lemond and see if he's got any left. Last I talked to him I think he had one. But it may have sold by now. He's the resident Isuzu diesel motor guru. He taught Isuzus mechanics for years, but is now retired. He keeps all kinds of replacement parts for Isuzus. Gas and diesel
FYI: (in case you don't know) The Trooper Diesels came with three different size connecting rods to handle the boost. An Isuzu 2.2L pickup diesel will bolt in and work, but they don't have the optimum rods, so over boosting them is a death sentence. And to tubo a non turbo diesel Isuzu motor is a waste of money, cause it won't last long, unless you've got a real light foot. And what fun is that?
You could use a MUA5 gas transmission if you can find the 2.2L MUA 1-2 diesel bell housing. The front case half/bell housing will interchange. So,don't pass up a worn out MUA diesel tranny if it still has the front housing with it. A MUA5 in working order will be easier to find. Good Luck.
CJ

Edit note: The interchangeability of the MUA5 will only swap with the MUA 1-2 diesel bell housing. Not the other diesel 5 speed transmission. Sorry for the confusion. Jerry set me straight. I have the MUA 1-2 diesel bell housing. MUA5 tranny and someday I'll go pick up the other diesel tranny and make some comparisons. Who klnows maybe a diesel motor to put in front of it.

I did get it cheap for the price of $212.50. I knew for sure it would be hard to find the turbo diesel engine and of course the price wouldn't be cheap. I have already tried to contact Jerry Lemond by private message, but he hasn't replied. Sent him the message about a week ago. I actually have decided I would rather put in a non-turbo diesel engine from an 86 or 87 pickup. I believe if I put in a turbo diesel engine I will have to worry about problems with the engine down the road and I would rather want the reliablity of the non-turbo diesel. I have an 82 Chevy LUV diesel pickup with the non-turbo diesel and it has 215,000 miles on it and still runs great. The thing is with these engines is that they may be considered low maintenence engines, just change the oil, filters, and belts and you are good to go for a long amount of miles. The non-turbo diesel in the 81 and 82 trucks have 58 HP, but the 86 and 87 trucks have an upgraded 62 HP. Not much of a difference but if anybody here would have an 86 or 87 Isuzu non-turbo diesel engine for sale please let me know. Thanks.
