Cam options for 22re? #516522 10/21/04 10:08 PM

I have looked the archives over and can't seem to find any good results for cam options and respective gains/losses in HP, torque, fuel economy, etc.

I'm looking to invest in a 22re 4x4, but not sure whether the stock configuration will allow me to pull my little (16 ft.) aluminum fishing boat. Keep in mind that I'm looking more towards highway pulling power opposed to low end, 4 wheeling power.Anyone have suggestions? Thanks.

I have the TRD LEvel 1 cam in my '85. It seems to work well, also its smog legal in CA.

I have a Downey cam in my 88' 22RE and it's got a LITTLE gain but wasn't very noticable to me...

I'm going to put in the 261C cam from enginebuilder in my truck. I'll post the results when that's done. From what i hear it gives good low end grunt in the range of idle to about 4K or so.

I had a Crane cam in my old motor. You could notice the difference. I know they have a couple different cams to fit your needs. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/patriot.gif" alt="" />

I have an Engnbldr 270 in my 88' pickup with 22R-E...actually the Full Street RV head is in there. I pull an 18' Alumweld from time to time without any problems.

The 4Runner has the 261C engnbldr cam. Havent buttoned it up yet so cant give the basics compared to stock cam yet...but others really like the results in their rigs.

Folks thanks for the input, this is a great start and has me pretty sure of what to expect. I do wonder what the best bet for upgrading cams would be. Since, I will likely buy a high mileage truck, is there an engine remanufacturer that will upgrade the cam or will I need to employ a reputable shop to complete the rebuild to my specs?

A shop would be the way to go, get your parts from www.engnbldr.com and you'll be good to go. LC engineering and TCR sell performance engines, but they're a bit pricey.

On the cam subject, I had a Crane stage I (same grind as TRD stage I) in my old engine and it made a huge difference along with headers and a 2.25" exhaust. I had a nice tourqey powerband from 2.5-5k and if I stayed out of it I got pretty decent gas mileage.

Dok, can you expand on "decent gas mileage"? Although I realize the increase in performance has to cost me somewhere (i.e. the gas pump), I'm just curious what realistic expectations are for fuel economy after the upgrades.

You might be surprised at what a hot cam can do to your mileage. I installed the full Street RV head with O/S valves and the 270 cam and with the extra power came better fuel economy. Of course you have to be tuned right all the way to the exhuast pipe but Im not the only one to see INCREASED mileage along with the performance.
