I averaged around 17mpg city/highway on a fairly tired motor (200k+). In comparison, my new Jasper Reman is averaging around 19mpg with a high of 22!

Dok, what's your level of satisfaction w/ the Jasper reman? I've known guys that speak highly of their domestic engines, but haven't ran into any Toyota folks that have used them. They seem to be the most readily available when it comes to reman. engines. There are a number of shops near my house who are Jasper installers.

Very satisfied so far, I have about 3k on it and no problems yet. It was a bit pricey, even with getting it at cost (helps to have a friend that's a mechanic at a dealership) but I only had a weekend to get it done so a rebuild wasn't really an option. Good warranty too, although I hope I won't need to use it! I know a couple of other people with Jasper 22re's that are happy too. They definitely have one of the better reps for remanufacturers.

I installed a DOA 270 cam in my 22re powered 85 4Runner and noticed a slight increase in midrange power. I then welded up a new 2.25 exhaust and noticed another slight increase in power. Gas mileage stayed about the same after both mods. In retrospect I wouldn't do these mods again if I only wanted more power.

For pulling your boat a bone stock 22RE should have no problem at all. I just pulled a Four Winns bowrider (stern drive, 4.3, about 2500 lbs with trailer) from Phoenix to Pueblo West, Colorado with mine and it towed fine. I didn't go very fast over the passes, but it made it okay and on flat ground I maintained 65 mph with no problems. I towed my catamaran (total weight approx. 850 pounds) from Pueblo West to Salt Lake City recently and it was just fine. I expect your 16' fishing boat doesn't weigh over 1000 pounds so you'd hardly be able to tell it was there.

Allan, any particular reason you'd avoid the mods? I know my rig doesn't weigh the 2500lbs, but I'm inclined to say that it will be over 1000lbs, considering the water-logged plywood decking inside, not to mention the pile of camping/fishing gear I typically take! Regardless, sounds like you've run a good test for the conditions I'd be pulling under. Of course, I'm not in the mountains either.

What I meant is that for the amount of money and effort involved, I don't think the cam and exhaust provided much extra power. I replaced the exhaust because it had to be replaced anyway and I was doing a head gasket job so the cam was accessible, but the power gains weren't worth the cost.

For towing something light (under 1500 lbs), I think the 22RE is fine stock, especially if you're not in the mountains.
