When I got my Troop, it had these Radio Shack Specials that werent round speakers. So they were just screwed on. WHen I took them out, I could see where their was a factory speaker hole.
So I put some 6x9's in the back doors, and I took some 6.5" rounds to put in the front. One problem. Towards the top of the hole is a bracket that gets in the way. On the driver side it holds the hood releas hatch, I dont know what it holds on the passenger side.
How did you guys mount your 6.5" speakers? I was thinking about cutting that bracket down a little so I could fit the speakers. Any other options?

I went with some 2-way Pioneer 5 1/4s and had a pain putting the grills on and 3-way Pioneer 6 1/2s in the back, but anythings better than Radio Shack speakers I actually seen in a junkyard where someone put some 6x9s in the roof area above the back doors but I couldn't see if those were factory holes or homemade

I have a Pioneer 3500 in my 91 Troop. It had OE crappy speakers as well to begin with.
The rear speakers were mounted in their stock locations: above the rear doors on either side of the rear dome light. Good position I think, but baaaaad quality sound.
SO...I have stereo and speakers from my previous truck...Pioneer 4" for the front and 6" Fosgates for the rear...the Pioneers went right in...and give a better sounds quality than the previous ones but do not sound as good as they should.
The Fosgates I bought 1" spacers for (the spacers are absolutely neccessary as there's not alot of room behind there. Sounded like a good idea...but ugh...horrible sound. It was unbelievable the difference I heard in the old 95 S-10's doors and now in the Troop. Sigh.
I was building a shelf for the rear compartment, so I decided to just build a "box" for the speakers. It was my first time doing that...came out pretty well but I will do things a little better next time.
The speakers face straight up from the top of the box and that surface is covered in the same carpet as the rest of the shelf, tho it's its own seperate unit that sits directly behind the front seats (rear seats have been completely removed) and it can be moved or taken out completely.
Better sound, better placement and a fun woodworking project.

How would the spacers work?
I dont see how it would help. Spacers are plastic donuts which install between the mounting surface (trooper kick panel) and the speaker mounting flange. (outer ring of speaker) This allows the small-diameter magnet of the speaker to stick into the original 4" mounting hole. This spaces the speaker 1/2"-1" out from the mounting surface, depending on what spacer is used. I think 3 thicknesses are available - 1/2, 3/4 and 1" I used 3/4" and it works fine except for 2 things - I had to relocate the hood release on the drivers' side, and had to buy speakers with permanent-mount grilles due to a clearance issue on the passenger side (grille will not install past HVAC blower motor)
