I was wondering of some of you can post to tell me how deep a snow you've driven through with your Taco's. Try to stay stock, as I'm driving a stock 2004 4x4 SR5 v6.
I know there are different types of snow (wet, powder, etc), but you can explain that in your response also.
The reason for this is my Dads wife doesn't think a 4wd can go through any more snow then a standard 2wd (fwd or rwd). I tried to explain to her, but she just wont listen (she's always right, just ask her)... Oh, and yes she is a major beeatch! (you can tell her I said that!)
Thanks for helping prove my point!

I haven't had my Taco in the snow yet since it's 5 months old, but having grown up in the Cleveland area I've driven through a little snow the past 24 driving yrs.
RWD stinks, plain and simple. We grew up driving RWD GM V8's and they were no fun. Today's cars with traction control are infinitely better, primarily limited by clearance. Good tires make a world of difference as well.
FWD is as good or better than 4WD. The FWD cars we've had just go and go. The weight on the front driven tires is an immense traction advantage. The only limitation we've run into is, yes, clearance.
4WD works well if there's snow everywhere and it's deep. I don't see a need for 4WD in snow up to 10-12" unless it's icy underneath. Tires make a difference here again. Weight on the rear axle helps.
I've driven my 94 through up to 2.5 feet of snow w/ 31" tires in 4WD and not had any real problems. I don't *think* that's doable in FWD, definitely not in RWD.
Our AWD vehicles have far and away been the best. We've had a Montero, Discovery, and now a CRV and they handle superbly - the first two due to weight, fulltime AWD (CRV has reactive AWD), clearance, and tires.
Where we do have problems is when the plows make the huge berms of snow in front of driveways, which we just have to blast through.
So bring your vehicle up to Cleveland in late January for a first-hand test.

I would love to come up and hit some snow, that's my favorite part about having a 4x4. I've driven through snow deep enough to hide some cars!
The problem has been trying to convince my Dad's wife. She just doesn't understand how 4 spinning tires can get better traction then two. This is obvious to me, you and pretty much anyone else. But this woman refuses to believe anything.
I guess I'll just wait until winter, and while she's trying to get to work in her Continental, I'll just run circles around her...

And unless you're locked front and rear, only two (one each end) will spin.

Show her what it's like to take off in snow in RWD and slip and slide. Then, put it in 4WD and blast right through. If that does'nt convince her, tell her to get out and check to see if the reverse lights are working and then floor it! LOL

Hmm, just surfing from the off-road site. With my 86 on 31" BFG AT's I drove through 5+ feet of wet heavy snow that had compacted down from over 6 feet. I really wish I had pics, it was the most fun I ever had 4 wheeling and I never left the pavement. I did get stuck turning around and had to dig out a couple of times but I did drive through over 5 feet of snow. -John
