So pulling the crank timing belt pulley... what a PITA! The pulley was well and truly rusted on, and took a good bit of tug to get it off. I finally resorted to drilling and tapping it, since no puller within 50 miles of the truck would squeeze behind the thing. And I wanted to save the pump housing...
Of course, in drilling it, the bit overran and cut the crank's sealing surface for the oil seal- good thing this motor's toast, or I'd be REALLY pissed. Lesson- use a drill stop!
Now, the rear brake drums are already drilled and tapped- why couldn't they do the same thing here? It doesn't take genius, people!
Grump.

I traded-in a Taurus with half the mileage to get my Montero, mainly because all the things I was finding wrong with the Taurus were scaring the crap out of me.

The belt sprocket is powdered metal, not a cast or machined piece, and is just metal dust that's been squdged together and doesn't have any real tensile strength, so using a puller that uses tapped holes, a la a chevy steering wheel puller or harmonic balancer puller is iffy, and the part is compromised (a paper weight) anyway after you get it off. Just dremel a slot in the sprocket, and drive in a wedge, and the two parts come off quite easily. Then you can dress up the crank nose with fine emery paper, and use antiseize so it comes off easy next time.

If I remember corrrect (I'm getting older) there was something bolted to the harmonic ballancer and you use these drilled holes with jack screw to remove the pulley. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/butwiggle.gif" alt="" /> Nothing is difficult on a Japanese car. You need to know the trick. Bob Shaw

naw, I'm talking about the cam belt pulley behind it. Little, solid gear- toothed thing.
And if 2- 6mm holes 'compromise' that thing, well, it was a POS to begin with! But I'm not planning on reusing it- the other engine's was in better shape.

I work at a General Motors dealership and I can promise you that you wouldn't believe the safety defects that are allowed to continue in production for years AFTER A RECALL CAMPAIGN HAS BEEN ISSUED!
There is a recall for "N" body cars that they call "Thermal Events." This is code for [color:"red"] CAR FIRE! [color:"black"] For as long as I can remember, we have been fixing these cars by installing a relay in the ignition circuit. I think the first one was in 1998. 2003 models now need the same thing... DUH!
