especially since Wayne has the double-jointed midgets tied up right now.

hey - about running warm...after 2 engines and 3 heads, i put a double core radiator, cant believe such an easy fix took me that long...i actually had someone drill open the water holes in the head to the match the width of the block- both changes are overkill, runs too cold now, do either one not both

K, here goes. I changed the throttle body assembly today...no easy task but here's what happened.

It idled at 1100 on start then within 2 to 3 minutes, kicked down to 800. Every thing seemed fine, didn't hear no skippity-do-dah and almost got my hopes up.

Then for shits-n-giggles, I wanted to see what would happen if I tapped the gas pedal. When I did, the RPM's went up to 1500 and stayed there. I tried to kick it down and it went up to 2000 and stayed. Tried a little tap on the pedal and it jumped to 2300 and stayed. Shut her down and restarted and she was at 1500.

Prior to this job the idle screw on the old assembly was out nearly all the way. Whereas with the new one, it is in nearly all the way. This assembly comes from the well reknowned Jerry Lemond and he told me the settings were either right where they need to be or pretty darn close. I have much faith in Jerry and I believe my old one was way off.

One thing worth noting is that when I took the old assembly off, I had to take the bracket off that attaches to the bottom of the throttle assembly and holds a throttle cable that goes vertically down towards the bottom of the intake. Not the front one that rests on the air breather and goes into the passenger/driver compartment. The vertical cable is attached to this bracket by two nuts...one underneath and one on top. While removing it I had to completely remove the upper nut but didn't think I bothered the lower one so I figured I'd be all set. What is this cable and could it be causing my current idle situation

Or, is this just a typical idle adjust problem. I had the battery disconnected while working on it and thought that the ECM would readjust the settings based on the new assembly but should I go and do the idle adjust properly or is this a bigger problem

I'm on my way back out there to check and make sure the cable/s are not sticking while accelerating but beyond that, I don't know for sure what to do next and I don't want to screw anything up that isn't already messed up.

I'm so close I can taste it. Besides the idle jumping while depressing the pedal, it ran smooth and maintained at whichever RPM it reached.

HELP...I'll be back to check in.

Is your accelerator cable getting stuck when you press on the pedal?

Wow Phil, that was quick, I haven't even gotten back out there yet to check.

On my way though and I'll let you know.

Man, I'm not sure about anything now. The vertical cable I referred to is the Trans Pressure Control or something like that and I can disconnect to tweak the idle but that seeminly has not a whole lot to do with the problem at hand .

But I swear I'm hearing an airleak somewhere within the intake. I tried to check all the hoses/lines today while I had the throttle body off but apparently I missed something or I'm hearing things

I disconnected and plugged the EGR vacuum line and the Canister Purge Valve, and disconnected the VSV electrical connection to adjust the idle but after three complete turn backwards it was no better with each turn. It would idle higher initially after each turn and then get irratic again. After three turns I figured there was something more to the picture. Tomorrow I will turn it back the other way and start from scratch.

Before I disconnected all that crap, I did notice that I can hear the VSV click on and off at around 900 and 1100. I never noticed that before and I'm wondering if this is par for the course or not.

Here's a question for all you 'Zu-Guru's...can I disconnect the fan so as to hear what I think I'm hearing more clearly? If so, I would have to remove it right? (or wrong cuz isn't that connected to the alternator as well?) Guess I'm thinking this too hard or something. If it's possible I wouldn't run it that way but just temporarily so I can hear better while tweaking the seaminly untweakable ???

I admit defeat for one night only....had enough....need a break But I shall be back in the trenches of the dark and forboding dungeon some of us call......."the garage"........

.......That is, of course, if your garage is in a cold climate, with a wood-planked floor, one dusty window, no real elbow room, no heat, hibernating barn spiders, and most of the tools you own in a Walmart-special toolbox kinda garage...or the much more tool-equipped, dead-mans pit, cold climate, 2-car, no heat, 4-dusty window type garage. (where are the smiley's that cry anyways?)

No doubt...thank goodness for kids....I am, at this very moment, listening to the "hampster dance" which my kids downloaded on my computer during a visit just for a moment such as this... If you don't know it, I strongly suggest you get it cuz it can work wonders on a frazzled and frustrated mind

K, I got off subject there...needed a little comic relief

Maybe a different thermostat could help you with this one?

Thanx but the thermostat is brand new as of June 30th. It is the same as the one that came out of it but with the rebuild, we put a new one in. It has since made many trips in the woods for hundreds of miles, a couple of long trips to the city (250 round trip), and lots of intown driving. Never had a problem with the thermostat, overheating, or overcooling.... everything in that regard is working as expected.

But thanx for the suggestion...every little tidbit helps whether it's to exclude something or investigate it further.

Changed the fuel pump assembly (thanx Showmedave) and of course it didn't improve anything but hey, it had to be done.

Next: Change the Dizzy. Yep, it's been on my mind since I found a little piton (french for little thing with no description) wedged between the number 3 post inside the cap. Today I heard a distinct electrical click while pushing on the throttle body cable. There may be a misfire inside that little compartment due to that little piece of crap I found in there.

Thanx Phil for the heads-up on the cool price for the dizzy.

I'll let you all know how things turn out.
