How do you test your Fan clutch. 91 FSM states if it moves to easy, leaks, of frozen. What is moving to easy, and how can you test for it? I drive about 20 miles a day and I noticed that the tempature is moving slightly up on the highway, but when I slow down the tempature drops down slightly. I can't give exact number I just have a gauge, but it seems like during the summer I was running right around the first segment on the gauge. Now I move past the first segment and about a 1/4 of inch more. I have a new raditor, new water pump, all new hoses.

Get the engine up to operating temperature, stop, put in park/engine running, raise the hood, open driver door, watch the fan blades while turning off the ignition key. The fan should stop immediately with the engine. If it continues to spin, replace the fan clutch.
Unless you have long arms, it's a little easier to get someone else to switch off the engine while you watch the fan.

It probably should be replaced any way as it is 14 years old? They don't last forever. Bob Shaw

Ok, I drove home from work. Stop and got gas and checked the fan by just moving it by hand. There was no resistance. So I think your right I'll get one on order. I was looking for something to do.

I checked magauto.com (no longer list mitsubishi, so I checked the dodge raider prices) and they want $199. Ouch!!

Just finshed replacing the orginal factory 91 fan clutch. I got the replacement at a local store. $80.00 not bad I will see how this holds up. Tension is noticable stiffer. I will road test tommorow. Now all I need is a new fan. My old one is showing some age. It will be interesting to see how the cooling reacts to the new fan clutch. I rebuilt the entire top end heads, new water pump, new hoses, new radiator, new fuel pump, new fuel filter, rebuilt ECU, TSP, coil, and dizzy. I have not had any isuses since the rebuild. Just want to be caution with engine tempature, because of the aluminum heads.

OK, was it worth a couple of degrees in tempature drop? Two scrapes on the head from the vampire like hood latch. Dam I need to invent a cover for that latch when raised or just remember to remove when working on the Montero. Dam, replying to myself again.

Been there, got the scars. You're not the only one. You're at least one of two...
