Yeah the timeing thing is a big deal. HOwever Rob said it runs and sounds fine so it just don't sound like this is a timeing issue. I know if you take one of the wires off it will still run and have a slight vibe to it but it will not ideal like he says it does. I wish I can help you out here man but I don't have a clue.If you haven't got it by this weekend we can mess around with when I get there if you want. Oh yeah have you talk to jerry yet about this?
Later, Daniel

This is dropping one hole while the other three are firing at the correct time. Mix up the wires and fire those plugs at the wrong time in the cycle and it will indeed make it act like it is trying to jump out of the engine compartment and leave.

Recognizing the fact that we are all just groping fish in the dark until ROB FIXES THE PROBLEM, it very well may "idle" depending on which wires are mixed up (only 2, maybe?) and how far off the dizzy is. Combine that with the relatively large rotating mass and it could smooth out some of the problems at idle. Add a load (rev it) and it's off to the races.

until ROB FIXES THE PROBLEM telling me to get off my arse once again and get to work, eh? well, i plan on giving it some attention tonight after work. i'll double and triple check the wires and firing order. i'll stop by my shop and grab the timing light. and if its still doing the mumbo jumbo by the end of tonight, i'll take a short video clip with sound so you can get a better idea of what i'm talking about. ...boy am i going to take lots of heat from michael if it turns out to be two mismatch wires! -Rob

Just to add some fuel to the fire mine wouldn't even begin to start when I put the wires on like the Haynes manual said. When I wired it according to the numbers off the dist. cap it worked like it should.

well michael... go ahead and say it! i told you so! I must regretfully bow down, i checked the plug wires last night and #1 and #2 were reversed. After swapping them out, idled just the same, but this time the shimmy and shakes were gone. so yes, I panic'd for nothing, and we're back in pretty good shape. now i just have to go back and adjust valve lash again from burning in the cam, and we should have this back on the road.
looking like if i make it to moab this year, i owe you yet another drink!
Thanks everybody. -Rob
