Body Damage is Cool
I have driven this approx 400miles and have had the fan/ac just stop then come back on for no apparent reason. Today went to get fuel filled up then truck wouldn't roll over. I jumped it and went to parts place batt is 4 years old and sides were bowed. They tested and said it was bad. So I put new batt-1000ca in Then tested system again and showed 12.57 amps and was told I needed new alternator pr-$269.00. The guy told me to take it out and have it rebuilt for about $80.00 locally and told me where. My problem is I drove the truck at least 10 miles with bad batt and Alt. is this possible with a diesel? According to the papers I have with the truck Alt batt+ cables were replaced last year! My father in-law 1200miles away who is an owner operator trucker for last 20 years and was a trained diesel mech prior to driving thinks it could be wiring and ground problems. ANY IDEAS WOULD BE HELPFUL> I plan on messing with the ground later when I get a chance.

Yes, I have heard that there are problems with the alternators on these trucks and depending on the situation, they may have to be replaced every year.
I have an 86 Trooper TD and when I bought the truck the alternator had just been replaced. I had the truck about six months and started noticing that the alternator light would come on randomly at idle. If I rev'ed up the motor a little, it would click and go off. This situation comes and goes but mostly comes now. I have increased the idle a little and it takes care of the problem for the most part, but every now and then the alternator light will come on as if I turned off the ignition which,in my opinion, may be part of the problem.

The way Isuzu wires up the alternator is strange: on all of the vehicles that I've ever driven, once you turn on the ignition switch, power is available to all of the systems in the vehicle. Not so with this Trooper TD: I don't have access to any auxilary power until the truck has started and the power is switched on by the alternator. Must have something to do with the revs.

Please post the alternator rebuilder's name/link for reference. $80 is a great price.

Here is an old link that I ran across over a year ago when I was looking at possibly buying one: $99 including a refundable $15 core charge.

Had a similar problem. FIRST check to see if the battery hold down bracket is metal. If it is and the "rubber/plastic" protective coating is corroded off you may have a problem. The metal hold down will act as a "short" to ground due to mositure on top of the battery.
Look at it this way. If the top of your battery is wet usually the wettness is water and battery acid. Battery acid is a conductor. If you applay a wire (or metal unprotected) hold down to the top of the battery then you can short the battery. It won't be a "direct" sudden short like a cable touching the body but rather a slow short that drains the battery.

It's your brushes the part number is JX118 and they are $3.22 for the set. While you are in there replace the Drive End Bearing 60AMP Hitachi #203FF for $6.58, Then go over to the Vacum side and replace the $2 worth of "O" rings and you will be like brand new.

Thanks. Are these isuzu part #'s? I will probably try this in a couple weeks right now I drove the truck over 200 miles before I noticed another problem except alt wasn't charging enough. (I put it on a trickle charger every night) I have to drive it for nowdue to the fact my wife's VOLVO has some sort of sensor problem that noone can quite figure out. It's pretty bad when you have 3 cars and the only one that does run right is the montero with 220,000 miles on it! I will see if I can get these parts thanks again...
