I don't believe so. I have a '99 Trooper and I just had my 4L30e rebuilt. I had 80,000 miles on the tranny before it let go. I only had first gear. I had my tranny rebuilt at a fairly well respected shop. I asked if they could "strengthen" the 4L30E. This particular shop was not aware of any options specific to this model. They were able to add an "update kit" to the tranny (not exactly sure what that means). Including a new torque converter, my total bill was $1897.00. Apparently this was not one of chevrolets better trannys.

I'm not sure if this is sarcasm or what.

If so, with the current shifting patterns (read: all over the map) of my 4L30E right now, I'm looking at more of a drivetrain swap than a tranny replacement.

Camaro junkers, here I come!!!

about the best thing you can do for a 4L30E is add an external fluid cooler, inline external filter, temperature guage (to tell you when you've taken it too far) and the Auto-Trans interceptor.

Yes, I am headed very much the same way. I can have a heavy duty chevy 700r4 for 800 bucks, and a matching 350 to go with it for a similar price if not cheaper. Rebuilding a tranny at 1800 bucks costs more than parts for my V8 swap. Granted a V8 swap will take a whole lot more time but it will work.

My only dilema right now is just the thought of the gas mileage I will be getting. I will go from a pretty solid 14-15 MPG to something more on the order of 8-10 with a swap like this. That is what hurts me most right now.

Maybe someone else could help me figure out how to make better mileage.

I called all of the tranny shops around here asking if they knew of anything to beef this tranny up and always came back with the same response.

For this reason I can't make up my mind about going with the tera lows because its just putting money into something I am going to waste. I would rather build a Dana 300 or something like it with that money.

I will also admit that I have been eyeing Astro vans with the 4.3 liter and 700 R4 as well. I might be able to pick up a wrecked one for cheap and have a hay day with that as well.
