Checking the codes for the "check engine" light is a wise idea. With the introduction of OBDll in 1996, it should be fairly easy to retrieve the codes and find the problem. As far as I know a light that comes on and goes off will store a code...but pplotz is right...blinking on/off is an indication that the truck is definitely not happy about you continuing to run her without fixing the problem. You're lucky you have a 2000 and can use OBDll scanning to diagnose. Us first genners have to rely on other less reliable means of diagnosing and sometimes it can nickle & dime us to an empty pocket and a whole lot of frustration.
Good luck...

OK. Hit the local service station (closer then AutoZone) and, while they were busy, they managed to to the diagnostic.
She "blew" a Random Misfire" code and 3 Unknown codes. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />
...Dropping her off in A.M. for inspection AND now this B.S. Stay tuned...

Bosch plugs have been known to cause misfires in these motors. Get a new set of plugs and you may be surprised. Do a search on here about spark plugs.

It has something to do with the internal resistance of the plugs. I think they act as some kind of sensor when the plug isnt firing.

I agree Dan. Bosch is such a popular brand that you would think you are doing a good thing. Though I don't understand why, I've always had the best luck with NGK's, or Champion though. Go figure...

I did a quick search with +3.2 +sparkplugs and came acros this thread . I hope it works, its not very long, but describes the same issues you are having. But it also tells you which plugs to find. Dan

OK...was out of town for a few days...
The mechanic was able to get rid of the 3 "unknown" codes, but couldn't shake the "random misfire" code. The light kept flashing but he told me to head off on my trip and that maybe we would swap out the plugs like you guys have recommended. He had checked each plug and all seem fine.
Truck drove just fine as well on 600+ mile trip... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

You're not going to "shake" any codes here. 3 people already told you those plugs don't work on that engine and you are still confused. This engine uses "Ion-sensing" technology, which like dan said uses the plug as a sensor during the exhaust stroke. Using other plugs may be confusing the computer, since different plugs have different construction/internal resistance/materials etc. Isuzu, Delphi to use ion-sense ignition Isuzu Motors Ltd. and Delphi Automotive Systems Corp. say their ôion senseö ignition subsystems ù in use for the past year on Isuzu Troopers and Rodeos ù have enabled cuts in emissions and fuel usage while adding value by integrating functions.
The ion-sense system consists of an individual ignition coil for each cylinder and a central control module, none of which have any moving parts. After the spark fires the cylinder's air/fuel mixture, the system applies a DC current to the sparkplug gap, turning the spark plug into a sensor. When there are ions present in the gap, there are changes in the DC current that can be translated into useful information about the effectiveness of the combustion process.
Delphi says the ion sense system eliminates the need for the individual crankshaft, camshaft and rough-road sensors typically used for engine-management information. Also, the in-cylinder sensing of misfire and knock is an improvement of most current methods.

Report Post | IP: Logged So if Isuzu goofed up by putting Champion spark plugs that wouldn't even work correctly when the truck rolled off the assembly line, I suppose I can't bust your balls about not listening to what people have suggested. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" /> The whole system seems mysterious to me and very complicated. I can see how it could measure a/f ratio of exhaust gas, but how can it determine pinging? It must measure wether fuel is present and when it turns to exhaust gas, maybe if it ignites too early compared to crank position, the ecm determines the engine is pinging. Good stuff though either way.
