Getting the Wheeling Fever

I am getting the truck back together now (95 runner 5sp w/ 3vze, that one little stray head bolt washer came in today from toyota, so the heads are now tourqued, got the manifoldas on, and the crossive and down pipe all bolted up. I started to put the cams in when I noticed that on my right cam on the #1 cap on the part of the cam the cap rests on, at the rear on the raised ridge, two pieces are broken off. I am assuming that this is important. Probably something to do w/ oil pressure and such. (will try to post pics tommorrow). I am guessing that I did not remove the cam caps in the proper order thus causing the damage.
1. Is this important?
2. does anyone have a spare cam lying around?
3. are cams like cranks in that each has a specific bearing size. a. where do I find this info, or do I just get new bearings w/ the new cam?
Yep, looks like I'm going to keep feeding the MR2 oil as I'm commuting about 350 miles each weekend, damn I can't wait to get my truck back! I think the gas my truck guzzles is cheaper that the oil my MR2 is burning.

no such thing as cam bearings on a 22R. the cam rides right on the head and caps.
all cams from 20R/22R/22RE motors are interchangeable, there's also a lot of performance aftermarket cams available
do you have any pictures? im having a hard time getting an idea of what you mean by pieces broken off
'79 sport 4x4 longbed 20/22R hybrid with EB's OS valves, 268c cam, offy intake, weber 32/36, thorley header, 5 speed swap, 34" LTBs, downey 3" springs, marlin hysteer, 4.88s and locked

He's fersure describing a V-6 cam....and I too believe he's talking about the thrust face on the cam.
He needs a new cam....or do they only come in pairs?

Thanks for the replys! Definitely the thrust face. here are a few pics ![[Linked Image]](http://www2.freepichosting.com/Images/421581312/1.jpg) The pictures are a little dark, but you can just see the first thrust face. There are two breaks on opposite sides, each a little more than an inch. Does the 3vze have cam bearings? I do not see any, but I keep seeing a passing reference in one of the manuals. (online autozone) Can I just replace one, or do I need to do it in pairs? Will replacing the cams neccesitate adjusting the valves (please god no!) Thanks again guys!! Anthony

c. Will replacing the cams neccesitate adjusting the valves (please god no!) a. They are built into the head!! b. I would not, replace them both!! c. More then likely they will have to be adjusted, check them!!!

I wish I knew how I did that! I was very careful when I removed the cams. I did not see the removal sequence in the book untill the 1st one was off, but I still alternated bolts. This is the only time I think it could have happened. As soon as I pulled them, I wrapped them in plastic and placed them in the truck.
Oh well.....
Thanks for the answers!!!!
Anthony

Camshafts are rather brittle-easily damaged. It might have been a bad casting and the chips happened while in service.
If ever you remove the oil pan, those pieces might be waiting there for you.
