Bought an 89 runner this Saturday. It has a 4 cylinder with manual tranny. I bought it with the idea of overhauling the motor since it has 192,000 miles on it but it still runs strong and does not smoke. I got it in Austin, TX and drove it 360 miles home, no problems. I was impressed with the gas mileage compared to my 87 raider <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="images/icons/shocked.gif" /> . I have a few of questions:

1. the engine makes a clattering sound at startup only when the engine is cold. Once it warms up the noise goes away. Any suggestions?

2. No gauges for oil pressure and rpm's. How have some of you added gauges for this?

3. The shifter boots are horrible. Is there rubber aftermarket boots?

1. Sounds like the lifters are loud. Maybe the valves need adjustment?

2. A lot of guys add the SR5 cluster - they are on sale all the time on ebay. You'll probably have to wire the other gauges.

3. JC Whitney sells stuff like that. I have leather boots on top of the rubber boots on my SR5 so if you find the forward console from an SR5 it will have the leather boots.

I would say the noise is the t-chain.the tensioner is wore out with that kind of miles but what do I know I have a V6.

If it only makes the chatter on start up then goes away change your oil filter to one with a anti drain back type look for a sr5 cluster that is the best way to go it is a direct swap and the shifter boot i would go to the dealer the whole thing is only a $100 i just got a new one

</font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana, Tahoma, Arial, Helv, Helvetica, Sans">I would immidiately check the timing chain guides to make sure they aren't broken. 86-on used single row timing chain with plastic guides that are notorious for breakage. When they do, the chain rubs against the timing chain cover, and one of two things happens:
1) The chain breaks, and since the 22R is an interference engine, you are looking at $$$$$
2) The chain eats into a coolant passage, dumping antifreeze into your oil. $$$$$

If you are lucky, it will just be the oil filter, like firemedic said.

Sometimes there are even some on Ebay.

Thanks, guys. I was thinking of taking off the valve cover and checking valves and taking a look at the timing chain guides. I'll get a stethoscope and try to pinpoint source. Since I have not worked on this type of engine, how long does it take to replace timing chain, and guides? Is it a pita?

The timeing chain is not to bad to do the first time i did one took me two days <img border="0" title="" alt="[Mad]" src="images/icons/mad.gif" /> That is a long story but i can do one in 4 hours now if you need to do one just post back here and we can walk you through it I would start with the oil filter That is a know problem with them I run a K&N but you can run a chaeper one just get a anti drain back type If you do the t-chain i would get one with the metal guides
