I had the same kind of misterious noise in 4wd in my Rodeo 2002, during the first 20K miles of its "life". Everything was clean and nothing could be found by my dealer. The noise diappeared after about 20K miles and have never came back yet (it has about 53K miles now). It was a steady scraping metal-like noise of high frequency.
