Well, I'm going to be poking around in there tonight and see what I can find. If it's a new rocker assembly, then so be it. I only need to keep this truck another forty years or so

Real easy to check alignment of the rocker in relation to the valve tip. Pull the adjustment screw out of the rocker...the hole should be centered directly over the tip.

As soon as the valve cover is off and you start looking any rockers that are out of alignment should be obvious though. Currently have the valve cover off my original 81' 22R in the Celica. Steel rockers instead of aluminum and quiter than a mouse cutting the cheese...would you believe that a 24 year old engine that has never had any internal work is showing no wear on the cam/rockers? The intake side adjustment screws are just starting to see the hourglass pattern (prolly from being too tight, had to loosen things up) and all 8 were dead nut center over the tips of the valves. Compression check last night revealed 155 psi across all 4 cylinders too.

I'm really leaning toward the rockers because of what some of the other fellers symptoms are exactly what's going on with mine, specifically the "sometimes it's quiet, sometimes you can't shut her up". Well if it is the rockers, Guess what? EB sold me some adjusting screws from a perfectly good rocker arm assembly he can sell me.

Old trick..........disassemble rocker shafts.....rotate shafts 180 degrees and reinstall. May have to drill/tap holes for lock screws.

While apart, examine shafts for grooving and egg shape. Do same with rocker inner bores.

While you are fiddling with it, get yerself a tube of machinist's blue(prussian blue).....or use ink from ball point pen shaft....Apply thin coat of blue/ink to rocker screw tips and cam lobes....roll engine over at least 2 full revs...then examine valve stem tips and rocker follower pads to see where blue transferred....You may discover that cam lobes are unevenly worn. And it will also indicate if screw tips travel to stem edge when actuating valves.

P.S.

To get ink from ball point pen shaft, just heat with cig lighter and it will run out....
