I wheel a 90 ex-cab with a 123" WB and I have no problems on trails like Dusy, Barrett, Con, or 4-Dice. You just have to learn where the "break around" point is. The long WB is also great for pulling out short WB rigs (aka Jeeps)!!!!!!

Many thanks for the replies. I have my eye on the standard cab, but partly because I know the owner and how it has been taken care of, and what can I say, I love the way the short thing looks. Still struggling with the thought of the tiny interior. I appreciate the information from you guys that are driving the different rigs.

How many times have you heard someone say "I wish I had less power!"? Usually it is the other way around.
I hear a lot of people saying that they wish their rigs weighed less or they got better gas mileage quite often.

I hear a lot of people saying that they wish their rigs weighed less or they got better gas mileage quite often. I went the power (for a 22re at least) route the first go round with my engine and I have to say I'm much happier with a stock engine and intake/exhaust mods this go round. It still gets around and I'm getting 21-22mpg on the highway and around 19 in town as opposed to 14-15 and 17. The 3.4L is a nice motor (I've pondered stealing the one in my mom's '98), but at 150hp the 2.7L is no slouch either

You should also mention David that you have a flatbed, replaced the body panels on the side of your truck, and now run plastic windows because the glass ones broke.

Still struggling with the thought of the tiny interior. you can actually fit an amazing amount of stuff behind the seat of a regular cab...even with the seat all the way back. lemme think...i have full set of ratchet/sockets, wrenches, breaker bar, crow bar, come-along, lantern, flashlight, little air compressor, jack, two tow straps, fire extinguisher, digital multimeter, oil filter wrench, spare quart of oil, spare jacket, first-aid kit, mechanics stethescope, hammer, fsm, spare windshield wiper blade, and a few other things back there. my truck has a canvas (or nylon, or soemthing) organizer thing with a bunch of pockets riveted to the back of the cab behind the seat...it was there when i got the truck used...not sure if they come with the truck or not. if not, i highly recommend getting one...it will allow you to cram a lot of stuff back there. the one thing that you miss is the ability to throw something like a backpack back there. but, you can always get a cap...or even a toolbox...in the back and have a lot more storage room. i have a cap on my bed and carry a bunch more stuff back there...i like it a lot....especially for overnight trips. also, i love my short wheelbase...there have been a few times when i was able to turn around on tight trails where i think i would have had to back (which would have sucked) out if i had an extra cab.

I wheel and "88 x-cab and its really not a big disadvantage for me. Yes there are times when a standard cab would be nice, but i am 6' 1" and i get pretty uncomfortable in a standard cab. The space behind the seat is nice to put stuff you dont want out in the weather too. BUT... there is quite a big difference in length between the older x-cabs like mine with no rear seat, and the '89 and up x-cabs with a rear seat. I have freinds who wheel these newer x-cabs and there are times the wheelbase definitly gives them trouble. I rarely have problems with getting high-sided because of my wheel base. Although it definitly helps that i have a suspension lift and most people i wheel with have body lifts.
If you get a LWB toyota do a suspension lift!!!!!!

I hear a lot of people saying that they wish their rigs weighed less or they got better gas mileage quite often. I would take a less powerful, more efficient, lighter, and less-likely-to-break-something motor anyday. My 90 22RE with 32s and 260,000 miles gets 25 mpg on the highway. My friends 01 5VZ with 33s gets 18. As for the storate mike, you can fit a lot behind the seat. And throw on a lightweight aluminum shell, and you're set.
