Getting the Wheeling Fever
My '98 Trooper (83K miles) has a squeel coming from the front wheels. It is intermittent and only happens at higher speeds but not always. It does not change with engine RPM. I thought it was a break pad wear indicator but I pulled the calipers off all four wheels and the pads look fine and no sign of contact of the metal wear indicator on the rotors. I repacked the front bearings and the noise seems to be less noticible now but still there at times. Would worn wheel bearings make a squeeling noise? How about CV joints?

Sounds like brakes to me. Does the noise stop when you apply the brakes lightly??

Sounds like you covered the obvious. However, I can't help but agree with ShowMeDave. Maybe take a second look at those brakes. Also, the wheel bearings again.
Quick test for wheel bearings.
While holding the vehicle speed steady, lightly apply the foot brake; this will often decrease bearing noise, as some of the load is taken from the bearing.
One last thing - your tire pressure is OK...right?

The noise does not go away when the brakes are lightly tapped. If you hit the brakes hard and slow the truck down the noise goes away for a while and then comes back after about 5 mins.

The pads themselves can cause squeels, especially if they're not original equipment type. A glaze can form on the pads which will cause a squeel. When was the last time your pads were replaced? What kind were they? You should also make sure that the thin metal plate which is behind the rotor isn't making contact with the rotor.

The front pads are still the original OEM pads that came with the truck. If it were the pads making the noise woudn't it go away when the breaks were applied? I'll check the metal dust cover to make sure it is not making contact with the rotor.

Frozen caliper? Constant contact with the brakes might do that. Can you jack the truck up and rotate the wheels, see if there's any noise like a dragging pad?

Of course, we're working on the presumption that this is a brake problem.

If you're at your wits end, and you're in Boulder, swing by Import Specialists (Dick, Rick, and Lynne) over on east Arapahoe. Good, honest people that'll set you straight. Tell them that I sent you...

If you do not have manual hubs, could be the needle bearings in the spindle have gone.

'94, and '00 Amigos and '00, 01 Rodeos. Rodeo springs and aftermarket 'hard top on 94. Aisin hubs OME 919's on the 2000 Amigo. 2000 and 2001 Rodeos have OME 912's and Aisin. Smoother ride with the OME 919's???
