Rear the Technical Articles on this site for an explanation of how the ECU works. EPROM would be the term for an Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory chip. I think the ECU has more of a battery backed memory where it stores things like trouble codes, engine settings, etc. That's how you can reset it, by disconnecting power for a period of time. It also has a PROM where the main engine operating code is stored.
