Getting the Wheeling Fever
Anyone out there ever try to put a 22RE, 3RZ-FE or 5VZ-FE engine into a 2nd generation 4Runner that originally had a 3VZ-E?

Just wondering if it's possible.

You will have to do a search for this. I remember a couple of people trying the 5vz swap into a couple of different vehicles. Also, you might try searching in Google.

Off Road Solutions has a wiring kit for doing this swap here:

Good luck!

I swapped a 3.4L 5VZ-FE into my '93 4Runner this past spring. It's pretty straight forward. The crux of the problem is the wiring and the exhaust. For the wires, basically you have to match about 30 wires from the body to 30 wires coming from the motor. Kinda hard to figure out, but it's all there. The exhaust is just pain 'cause it's tight. Any decent exhaust shop can fabricate it up though. I did it on my garage floor and took the pipes to a shop to have them bent.....I would suggest having a shop do it though.

There is a ton of info here on 4x4 wire on how to do it. I was able to get all the info I needed here and it took about 3 or 4 weeks playin around after work and on weekends (although I took about 2 months to plan the swap).

For difficulty level, take this into account...I hadn't turned a wrench (other than basic tune-ups) in about 10 years prior to my swap.....so it's really not that hard. The only specialized tools were a motor hoist and a blowtorch to bend and weld brackets and exhaust pipes.

Wow, 93 CoRunner, that sounds pretty cool. What made you decide to do it?

Loved the 4Runner....hated the weak motor. The 5VZ-FE is exactly what that truck was always missing. Plus I love a good project.

I had originally planned on rebuilding the 3.0L with all sorts of power mods....DOA heads, cams, headers, injectors....a whole list of stuff. But, in the end the 3.4L had more power than all the mods would have given and it was cheaper.....even at a cost of $4500.

The rebuild with all the extra's was about $5000. But that did include replacing all the motor sensors. My theory there was I wanted reliability and MAF and oxygen sensors and the rest of them with 162K on them don't exactly qualify as completely reliable...I was already getting O2 sensor codes. My 3.4L has 62K on it and I don't expect to have to replace anything (other than t-belt and tuneups) for another 100K.
