I am trying to figure out exactly what is making noise in the drivetrain of my 4Runner. I have been assuming that I need a new transmission, but after reading through many posts I don't think that is right.
First off the sound is not a whine is sounds more like if you take an electric shaver turn it on and set it on the counter. The sound is intermittent and it only happens with the clutch pedal depressed. It doesn't happen even half of the time, but all I have to do is let out the clutch either in gear or neutral and the sound goes away. Sometimes if I am sitting at a light with the clutch in and I pull it out of first and back in the sound will start until I let out the clutch.
This is on my '85 4Runner with 22RE and W56. Does anyone have any ideas?

Throwout bearing most likely.

More than likely the sound your hearing is your clutch throw-out bearing. With the pedal in, the clutch fork has constant pressure on the bearing. Probably not your pilot bearing but if you have to go in there I would replace them both.

That makes sense to me. I looked on Marlin's site for a replacement. Is a release bearing the same as a throw out bearing? I would like to go with his HD kit if everything is included: http://www.marlincrawler.com/clutch.htmlI have done one clutch before, but just put the new parts where the old parts were. Yes sir, the release bearing is an accronim for throwout bearing or visa-versa. FSM is the manual of choice but I think most manuals are pretty specific when it comes to doing a clutch job. If your talking about going in there with out a manual, yea , it can be done but you miss a few items like specific areas to apply grease and torque specifications. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" /> It's still a pretty straight foreward fix.
