I'm planning to swap a rear 96 trooper axle under my 94 amigo. From what i've read the rear braking system are identical on my 94 amigo and the 96 trooper so hopefully that won't be a problem. The reason i'm doing the swap is to give my amigo a wider track using the trooper axle (63" compared to about 59") I plan on using 3/4" spacers on the front to widen that up a bit. I know i'm going to have to torch the bracketry of the trooper axle since it uses the coil spring set up and weld some spring perches on it. Anybody have any thoughts, opinion on this swap?

Nothing but positive thoughts on this end. I actually intend to do the same thing if I ever get around to doing a SAS. Do you know if the Trooper axle has limited slip? That would only make the deal sweeter since it was never an option on 1st gen Amigos. Don't forget to post some pics! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Those two years should swap straight across.... earlier Amigos use a different e-brake design that cables in differently, and IIRC also used different piston diameters than later trucks, which might yield different pedal feel.

All I can think to recommend is that you double-check the piston diameter on your two axles -- should be a great swap! I've considered something similar on my own truck. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" />

This is a good swap. The brake parts on the '94 Amigo are the same as used on the 2nd gen Trooper. You can swap out the complete axle, but the minimum you really need is the housing and shafts. Your existing brake components and diff will swap over no problem.

Another bonus to this is the e-brake cables on the Trooper axle are a little longer as well, so they are less of an issue if you ever go spring-over in back. The Trooper housing is also substantially larger too. 3.25" or 3.5" (can't remember off-hand) instead of the ~3" you have now.

I've been running 2" adapters on each side for 5 years or more, but I've got one of these axles in the garage now as well. I've been wanting to swap it in and get rid of the spacers, but want to do a coil/link setup when I do. Haven't gotten there yet. The width is good, and the tires will still stuff up into the wheelwell (barely).

Dan, i to was thinking about going with coil springs in the rear, but i lack fabricating skills, but using old man emu springs and extended shackles i can get pretty good flex out of the rear
