Getting the Wheeling Fever
Mine had the same problem once. The speedo cable had pulled out from the back of the dash while I was running speaker wires and such. After sticking it back in (I had broken the clip) the OD light resumed proper function and the speedo was working again.

One of the two speed sensors (two for redundancy, as the auto transmission won't shift without them) is in the speedometer itself..

If the speedometer cable is broken or other problem inside the speedometer keeping the speed sensor from working, then the O/D light would be flashing to indicate the failure...

Fix the speedo...

On US Petrol models, the speedo uses a electrical signal rather than mechanical (cable). Check the connection on the speed sensor which is located on the driver side (US)of the transfer case towards the rear of the case. It can be identified by the wires leading to it.

thank you for the advise. Mine is automatic and it does have the electrical sensor; is there a way to check its proper function? that is for the sensor and the speedo itself?

Ok I am not sure about the wiring on you model but I believe grounding the signal wire at the speed sensor would cause your speedo to peg at full speed thus telling you that everything from the sensor to the speedo is ok. (key on for this test)

You could also use a volt/ohm meter and measure the resistance at the sensor as someone speeds the vehicle up. On jackstands of course (not the prefered method).

Someone with better knowledge of your vehicle can probably tell you which wire to use at the speed sensor to "fool" the speedo into moving.
