Big tires and the factory camber angle are a bad mix. I set mine to 0? and signifigantly reduced the rolling resistance.
The other issue is the auto tranny and tall tires. The lockup converter helps a lot.
I have also found that a bad O2 sensor, coolant temp sensor, air temp sensor or a bad vacume advance will all hurt your fuel economy.
Right now with 31's and a turbo I get in the 15 - 16 mpg on mixed mostly city driving.
Mine fuel economy was quite low before I fixed everything. Also I got the exact same fuel economy beetween the turbo and the carb motor despite the extra power. It seems the fule injection when working right does help.
And of course... you may need a bit more gear with those 35" tires..not that you want to hear that.

I should really get that 24-tooth speedo gear per DougB(?). Yes, It is an easy swap and the stealer still an order them. If you forget the part#, just remember to order it for a mighty max. They can't find it for a Montero.

I don't want to break any ones heart but my Raider with 4.3 and 32" MT gets 20.5mpg on the highway, and uses about 3.5 gal. for a whole day of off roading. I got only 14.5 mpg same conditions with the 2.6. I think the 35" tires are just too big for the 2.6. Bob Shaw

I see you have a detroit rear as per your signiture, what rear end are you using w/ your 700r4 and what ring and pinion? I am planning the same drivetrain swap. But it will be built and assmbled on my spare frame, so I can continue to drive my Raider. Then I will just drop my body onto the new frame. It just will be a giant bonus when I get the better gas milage w/ the boost in torque and HP.

Well, I get about 6-8 miles per gallon in my Raider. Of course it hasn't been out of low range in a loooong time. That is trail only milage.
Two MRI's and a CAT scan....it's confirmed. I'm just not right in the head.

Steel wheels are at least twice as heavy as alloys (aprox) I know the tires are killing me. I haven't adjusted for the speedo being off but I can't imagine it's more than 1 mpg difference. I am parking this thing for the holiday's I really want to get this tranny swap done and I have an oil leak suddenly somewhere from the back of the engine. Plus my neighbor gave me a trooper that I put a clearwater on so I need to drive it a little.

Getting the Wheeling Fever

I'm getting around 9-12 MPG. in my 4cyl.... the 31's didn't really make a big difference from the stock milage. And I drive like a little old lady. It's kind of funny, I was going to get something "BIG" like a Harvester or something, but I thought "I want to wheel & get good milage too" so there was the monty.... alas my friends built International Traveler gets 15 MPG... oh fiddlesticks! Anyone know what the milage specs. of the 2.6 F.I. motor (outside US.) was? Harry

Wyleone, I have a Toyota 8". I should have gotten a later model which is wider, but did not know the difference. I had Reider put in 4.56 gears with the Detroit soft locker. Reasonably close to the 4.62 in the front. I keep the newer, bigger tires in the front. I had to weld on new spring perches on the bottom of the Toy axle and drill new holes in the yoke plate on the drive shaft. I got a hydraulic line lock from J C Whitney for the emergency breaks. Not a difficult job. That was 8 years ago and it still works fine. Bob Shaw.
