Totally Noob 4x4 Question... #539459 12/17/04 11:15 AM

Ok.... totally noob Q here but let me try to sum it up.

Example: 1999 ~ 2002 4Runner-4x4 (All Stock)

If I want to put on lets say 32-11.5-15 tires on her and lift her by 2" then is it that simple? Buy the tires and lift kit, get them professionally installed and I'm good to go? I worry about rubbing when the wheels turn and during everyday road/freeway conditions. A buddy of mine was saying something about spacers? I said, " [color:"yellow"]Space Invaders? Oh hell yea dude that game was tiiiiight [/color] !"

he didn't get it.

So anyway any advice for the noob would be greatly appreciated.

Drew

P.S. Not to rob a guy's pic but I like the look of this guy's truck, minus the white wall showing. And by white walls I mean those white letters on his tires, not those white things sticking out of his shorts. (jus playin dawg)

Body Damage is Cool
spacers

body lift - spacers to raise body off frame, to fit larger tires

suspension - ball joint spacers, part of some susp lifts

wheel - space wheel out farther to prevent rubbing against frame, etc with larger tires

take your pick

ok so let me understand this then.

I can take a stock 4runner, and put on a 2" lift kit and add 32-11.5-15 tires and the set up will run well. No rubbing, no complications, no problems. I dont have to modify the suspension at all? I can keep it stock other than the 2 modified parts (i.e. 2" lift kit and tires)

Sry it seems a tad easy.

Ahhhh!!! also does adding such things listed above hurt the automobile in anyway? Like does is cause too much stress on any such part, or may cause breakage of something because of the modification?

Thanks for the info.

yer gonna have some issues puttin 32's on with only 2" of lift, yer gonna rub like crazy, if thats all the lift you wanna run, yer gonna have to get creative to fit those meats, i.e. fender trimming, low backspacing on your wheels, some one please correct me if im wrong, but i think the metric eqiv. of a 32 might be a little thinner, which would help you out

Yes, 2" of lift will clear 32" tires. I've heard of people clearing 32" on stock suspension. 31's came stock on a lot of trucks, so one inch up isnt a big change.

Now, there are a few things to take into consideration. Most 99-02 4x4 4Runners came with 16" wheels, and therefore, have larger brake rotors and calipers, which will prevent you from running a 15" rim. You will have to go with a 16" wheel and tire, which will be a metric size, like 265/75/16, which is the closest to a 32.1150.15.

Your CV boots will more than likely wear out faster than normal. They may last a year or 2, or maybe 3-4 years if you are lucky. You can get a diff drop from Roger Brown

http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/ForSale/DiffDrop.shtml

This will drop your diff down and keep the CV angles the same as stock.

Just throwing this out there for giggles, but I'm currently sitting at 1.5" up front (not necessarily preferred) running 285/75's (33x11) AND with 8" wheels. That's equivalent to a half-inch lift on a '99. Yeah, I rub a bit off-road, but it has certainly been manageable (with just the standard pounding). Only annoying when passengers are along. No doubt stock wheels would be much better in terms of the rubbing.

I am recently a firm believer, based on my 4Runner, that as long as you can clear the upper A-arm with similar width tires, as some 4Runners will vary with this, you can clear 285's with the standard trimming and pounding WITHOUT any lift. One could probably count on some rubbing, but as to how severe it is, will depend on one's sensitivity to the matter.

Tks for the responses everyone...

Yea, just to clear up some stuff. Id like to keep the stock rims, sry if I messed up the measurements. Stock rims are 16" not 15" right?

The only thing that worries me is that one response is that a 2" lift will clear 32-11.5in tires on stock rims, while the other says that Id have to do some pounding and trimming. Not to be a pain, but which is it?

Thanks all for your help...

Drew

You can fit 32's(265/75/16) on stock rims with a 2" lift.

MOST trucks came with 16" rims, but some basic models did come with 15" rims.

And to make things more unclear, assuming you end up with 16" wheels, you will be able to run 265/75's without a lift. This is very common. You will likely experience the slightest of rubbing, though.

Most 265/75's are 31's, though generally considered 32's for some reason. Most are exactly 2" shorter than their 285/75 counterpart. And, 285/75's are not 34's.

All 285/75's are narrower than a 32x11.50

First things first, get the 4Runner, then think about the tires.

why is it that some measurements are in inches, and some are not.

E.G. 265s = 31's
285s are narrower than 32's

Is that Centimeters? Or does the measurement just differ from manufactor to manufactor?

Thanks all,

Drew
