Just throwing this out there for giggles, but I'm currently sitting at 1.5" up front (not necessarily preferred) running 285/75's (33x11) AND with 8" wheels. That's equivalent to a half-inch lift on a '99. Yeah, I rub a bit off-road, but it has certainly been manageable (with just the standard pounding). Only annoying when passengers are along. No doubt stock wheels would be much better in terms of the rubbing.

I am recently a firm believer, based on my 4Runner, that as long as you can clear the upper A-arm with similar width tires, as some 4Runners will vary with this, you can clear 285's with the standard trimming and pounding WITHOUT any lift. One could probably count on some rubbing, but as to how severe it is, will depend on one's sensitivity to the matter.
