Just bought my first Jeep for $500. 94 Wrangler w/ 2.5L and a burned out auto trans. The body and interior are mint. For now I just want to get the thing moving. What type of trans is in this thing? Are they easy to find rebuilt, or do I rebuild this one? Engine runs strong. I have worked on 4x4 Fords and Dodges but never a Jeep. Any info would be great!

You should have a TF904 behind that I4. I am not sure about the availability of this trans or how tuff the rebuild would be. I do know it is a three speed trans in an aluminum housing and I would guess (not sure) that the TF909 from behind an I6 would be a direct swap.

actually you have a 30RH 3 speed tranny the 904 and 909 were used in the CJ sereis and wrangler 4 bangers till 91.
since it is blown and you have nothing to lose. go get a manual and clear off some space on a big table in the garage. if you are good with machines you should be able to pull it and rebuild it yourself with had tools and maybe a trip to a tranny shop to use one of there presses for under 300$.

Thanks for the info. I got a quote on a rebuilt trans for $746. w/ 24 month unlimited mile warranty. Does that price sound high? I would take your advise and rebuild it myself but I know the manual alone is going to be $100 and my time that I have little of. Plus it's snowmobile season here in Michiagn.

Body Damage is Cool

That doesn't sound like a bad price to me. The last Reman. automatic (different model) I priced for a dodge truck was $1500. $ 750 would have gotten me one from a junkyard. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" /> I did like sunder said except I used a home made press. cost me about 300 to do it myself.

price sounds decent. i'd try and find a generic chilton that gives you rebuild on a couple different models. you can pick those upf ro about 30 and a master kit for around 80-120.
how bad is the tranny fried? you might get away with a seal kit for 40$. i really think you should pull it apart in your garage and see if you can find some damage.

I found a better deal. Gearhead Transmissions in Ohio has a end of the year deal $100 off any rebuilt trans. They quoted me 695$ so ....$595 Thats with 2 year and unlimited milage warranty and shipping included.
