Help needed with a specific CEL code...
Yesterday, while turning on the engine, my 98 Rodeo (89K), had a little difficulty starting; I should have kept the ignition going little longer, my fault... Then, the second try did not go through. Engine started at the 3rd try... 2 miles after taking off, Check Engine Light came on.
I had it read at the shop this evening while having an oil change. The code is 1404. I called the dealer and I was told that it is related to EGR.
Note that the CEL was not on anymore, when I picked up the car. Is this because the problem was intermittent or because it was simply "read"? If the first is true, is it OK to drive it around like this -until it shows up again?
Should I take it to dealer with the code 1404, even though the light is off now?
Thanks very much for your help and time in advance!

Body Damage is Cool
The CEL is off because the code was erased.

I may be wrong but if the CEL is off it was turned off by someone or the reguired number of "clean starts" was met........about 30-42 starts.

That code pertains to the EGR valve diaphram sumpt'n,sumpt'n....book is out in the truck.
My 00 turns that code on every other month or so.I just turn it off and drive.
It normally happens after driving for a long time a set speed, then slowing down fast and stopping....ie; off interstate, down ramp, into gas station,
Rodeo off............get gas.......start truck,pull out
get back on interstate and ***** CEL.

My .02 is I would just drive it.........

Getting the Wheeling Fever
You might want to clean the carbon out of the EGR unit and the pipe that goes from the EGR into the intake manafold area. Do a search and you will find many posts that discribe how to do this.

You could clean out the EGR valve and it's passages, but it got all carboned up because the vehicle run too rich during the EGR opening, causing the eventual build-up that clogs the passage. Check the NHTSA website for recalls and/or TSB's regarding that code. My '99 had its PCM reflashed by the dealer for that same problem. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />
