How do you swap in a Toyota front IFS. The diff is on the (wrong) passenger side? Can you move sides by just changing the tube from one to the other? Swaping in the Toyota rear is easy. I did that. Bob Shaw

I posted this on another board but maybe you guy's can help.
Mine is a 2000 Montero sport LS, 3.0, auto, 4X4.
I would like to know what the diff gears and T-case gears are.
I want to change gearing, and the 2.85:1 T-case gears would be the most cost effective but will only fit if the original ones are 1.925:1 not 1.90:1.
Otherwise I will have to go with 5.29's front and back. Ouch$$

Didn't know there was another case besides the 3.0 and 3.5 (trannies aside). I would think the FSM would tell how to determine. Trouble is no one here is likely to have an FSM that new. The 95 I have is the newest one I've ever heard of anyone having. I'd maybe try calling the dealer with your VIN. Spare yourself the agony of mentioning the 2.85s though as the dealer will be clueless to that kind of drabble.
Also, I believe there are next to no 2.85s left so if you want them, better move quick. I think the last I heard was one set of AT gears left.

I just bought a set of 2.85 t-case gears from Mark Hardman at the beginning of last month and have since had them installed. At the time I was working out acquiring a set from Mark, he had said he had two sets left. One of them I got, the other (last I heard) were possibly being purchased by somebody from Norway, but Mark was unsure if the sale was going to go through. Bottom line, if he has any left, he only has one set left. I wrote Mark last week to find out whether that last set of gears was still available. I was planning on posting his response here once I got it. If there is still a set left and if they fit your t-case, I highly recommend it. They ROCK!

Capn: Would you mind if I ask what the install cost? And did it include everything, e.g. dropping the case, new seals and gaskets, etc.? Did they know about the ground down snap ring pliers?

My pleasure (all figures are in USD):
gears - $750 shipping from Australia - $60 new t-case parts from Mitsubishi Parts (bearings, seals, thrust washers, etc) - $580 shop labor - $750
Seems like a lot, but every penny was worth it.
Mark had told me about the ground-down circlip pliers and I passed that info on to the shop. I didn't know, however, that a piece of hardware (a fork or something) had to be machined-down slightly and when they got everything back together they couldn't get it into 4-low. They were able to remedy it, though, without taking the t-case back apart.

So you really rebuilt the case then as well. I just did the seals as based on it's history, it likely saw very little 4WD. Whatever it would have cost me to have the gears put in and the seals done, I did not have the Jack to spend. So I took a chance and opened it up myself. Haven't actually wheeled it yet, but it ran fine in the snow covered roads last week.
My favorite part- 5 MPH at 3000 RPM in 1st gear.
Damn I've got to get out to the trails...

Yeah, when I got mine back from the shop I drove over to my buddy's house (lilmule) and told him over the phone to look out the window as I drove by while I had it in 4-low. His comment was "that's not bad", to which I replied "yeah...I'm in 5th gear!"
After that I showed him 1st gear. He was quite impressed.
I had the shop do it because I'm not experienced at tranny's, t-cases, and the like. I can turn a wrench, but there's something to be said about having a professional do it when you're going to be out in the middle of nowhere. I'd rather not find my rig stranded because I chose to save a buck and screwed up something critical because of my lack of experience with some things. I'll turn a wrench on my other vehicles only because I know I can get them back home by myself. Sure, I can still break down on the trail, but having a pro do it is more of an insurance policy.
All the bearings, seals, etc were replaced because it's just a safe choice. I don't know the history of the first 114,000 miles on my Montero, so no telling. Just prudent to do so if it's all torn open.

...I can turn a wrench, but there's something to be said about having a professional do it when you're going to be out in the middle of nowhere... I grappled hard with that myself. Mine was the proverbial owned by a little old lady for the first 100k. In the end it was either try myself now, or wait until I don't know when to pay. We shall see. Until then, I cross my fingers every once in a while.
