From what I have picked up on the boards this is the nicest offering in a Montero. So is this basicly a 3.0 block? Stock output is 215 hp and 248 torque, is this close to the 4.3? I am asking because I have a line on a 3.5 drivetrain. And yeah I did a search. Chris

The 4.3 liter is 160-180 hp and apporx 230-250 ft lbs torque.
the 3.5 mitsu is alot smoother, however...IMHO that is.

My guess is that those numbers are for he DOHC motor. I've spent time in a 95sr both as driver and passenger, and the motor goes very well in a 5000lb+ rig, so it a SWB it could be lots of fun. The torque curve is going to be much higher, due to less displacement, and design ie. 4-valve vs. 2-valve.
IS it going to be as good as a 4.3?????????????????? Well...you are still going to need to fabricate everything assoc. with the swap, and you will still have gearing and transfercase gearing issues also. If you can mate it up to the gen-1 transmission, it will be pushing the edge of realibility with that trans, and that is why Mitsubishi didn't use it. It is going to be an expensive swap, and with a used motor there are other expensive possibilites, encountered while doing the swap. Any Chevrolet motor is going to be less $$$$$$$ to go through. Bragging rights.....yes, but at what expensive, and to who!!! Just some thoughts Kary

How about swapping the Engine Tranny & X case in there? Not sure if it will fit, but if it does... Of course you will need to Fabricate mounting hardware.

Ray; OKRed said that he had a line on a "3.5 drivetrain". The 3.5 still doesn't use a transfer case with a low range that would be considered good by most here. I added the gen-1 trans stuff, as he does list having a V-6 trans in his garage in his sig. And others have mentioned trying to use it also. Kary

He'll likely need the complete engine (w/brackets and accessories), tranny, t-case, ECU, full harness, custom prop shafts and maybe a body lift. The oil pan may have to be hacked and engine and tranny/t-case mounts may have to be relocated, but I'm not certain of that.
It might be possible to bolt up the 3.5L to the KM148, but the starter location, drive plate and transmission stays are different due to the depth of the block skirt.
I took a look at that swap a while ago and backed off because I didn't have enough space and equipment to put 2 engines side-by-side to see the exact difference and didn't want to spend the money for an engine I might not be able to use.
It would be a great swap (though a lot of work) for a SWB and I hope someone will try it to see what's involved.

Ok, I see what you mean Kary.
Frank, I know where two 3.5L DOHC blocks (out of their monty's) and Tranny's are located (sitting in the same garage no less... well tranny back might still be in the rig.) I don't remember exactly.
Maybe we can coerce the owner (Carlos... you got your ears on?!?) to go take some measurements...

Have at it! I'm headed down a different road for now. The 3.5's a great idea, but you'll likely need to have a 3.o and a 3.5 side-by-side out of the truck to figure it all out and in the end it'll still probably be a try for fit in the frame. I do think it can be done - just not a drop-in.

Nah, the 3.5L idea will never work. Better change the subject.

I appreciate the responses, I have to admit I was kinda hoping someone was going to tell me the 3.5 block was the same as the 3.0, but who could get that lucky.
I wish I had more specs going into this but basicly this a transplant from a 97 and the guy is going to let me park the truck at my house to do the swap. The truck has 80k on it so it's a good candidate for a plug and run, The SWB is getting torn down anyway due to some rust issue's I have got to take care of.
Kary, the numbers I quoted where 2000 spec so they could be off a bit.
Oh yeah and I haven't finalized the deal yet but money will be in the ballpark of 1200 for the entire train and harness.
Another option is to just put the body on the 97 frame, of course this would be a whole lot of work, but might be easier in the long run
