Thanks for all the replies. Looks like a header and bored throttle body will give me some increase, w/o major expense. Any major mods would be money better spent in a bigger truck. One of these days I'll set this one up for wheeling.

Body Damage is Cool
I would never disagree that a fullsize turbo diesel is best for towing, but the going-rate on a new one is $35k+. Towing a 3,000 pound boat is well within the limits of what a compact pickup was designed to handle. I used to tow a 3,700 pound boat with my 22R-E. Fast, it wasn't, but it wasn't slow enough to hold up traffic either. My advice is to give your truck a full tune up, hook up the trailer and see how she does. If you'd like a bit more 'umph,' then consider dropping the money on the engine modifications. I wouldn't hesitate to tow that much weight with my V6.

I towed a very heavy trailer into the Sierras and then across the country without any problems. I used plywood to enclose it, too. I wish I had weighed it, but I was too scared to.

I am curious what people think is the best way to keep the low end torque, also.

I know, a lot of wasted time and money ... if I knew then what I know now....

When we moved to Alaska from California, we pulled a scary heavy trailer with us, I was also afraid to weigh it. This was before we recieved the recall for the head gaskets. I figured if I didn't blow the head gaskets pulling that load 3500 miles, and over several mountain passes, it was probably a good set of head gaskets. But I couldn't pass up the free oil change It is one reason I'm considering rebuilding the engine one of these days though, as I'm sure I put alot of wear on the engine from that trip. Also I'd like to do some long road trips in the future, sans pulling the boat, and reliability is very important when you're 100 miles from the nearest service station, and several hundred miles from any toyota parts.

I really only have one hill to worry about hauling the boat, starts at sea level, and gains a thousand or two feet of elevation. So long as I stay in the right lane I should be fine.

I'll plan to go through everything with the 120k service, good plan anyhow.
