Oil Filter Wrenches #547558 01/05/05 12:11 AM

I have one of those oil filter wrench(aftermarket) that fit around the filter and use a socket driver to spin. It's worthless because it spins from the tip of the filter. It can't get a good grip the hex part of the filter.

I've been using the clamp/band type for a long time now, but it's getting worn out. It seems to work the best so far, but I'm just wondering if any of you use a particular one that works great.

Does Toyota have a factory filter wrench that they sell?

Thanks in advance!

Ooh I have just the thing. Especially for 4runners. It is a set of metal fingers that you put on a long extension through the fender well. As you tighten, the fingers tighten. Actually I should say loosen but you know what I mean. I bought it from cornwell a few years ago. I will either take a picture or see if I can find one on the net.

It is a life saver.

Those socket type wrenches are available in many different sizes. I had to buy one to remove the factory installed filter from my '03 Tacoma, then had to get a different size to remove the factory replacement filter......

Go figure......

Ahh!! I was in Sears this past Sunday and I was checking this type of wrench out. I wasn't sure how well it worked though. They had 2-3 different types, I think.

yeah I wouldn't recommend the one from sears though. I had one and the fingers bend and slip. If it weren't for this socket head I wouldn't change my own oil on the 4runner.

They come in two different sizes, atleast from snap on. The smaller of the two works fine for the toyoto filters.

Wow, I've always had pretty good service out of Craftsman tools. If I ever had a problem with one I took it back. They as well as Snap-on have a lifetime guarantee. If you can afford Snap-on tools (or find a supply source other than the occasional vans) though, in my humble opinion, they are certainly the best around. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

"socket" types are good for "minimal" servicing ... I have one that no longer grips the filter .. used about 15 times . Time to buy a new one .

What brand was it? Mine has lasted almost 8 years as a mechanic....100s of oil changes.

I use one of those Craftsman strap wrenches, plastic handle and rubber strap. Works great (in either direction), fits all filters. Just clean any oil from the rubber after using it so it'll work next time.
