Need a Spot
Haven't been around for a while - mostly because my trooper has been running great. Until now... The tranny hulled out on me. I've got a shop looking at it but it may be FUBAR.

Anyone know where I could find a used one at a good price?

Thanks,
Joe

what is the shop claiming went wrong? these 5-spds are generally pretty tough and next to running them dry of oil, they're pretty hard to damage to the point of scrap metal.

expect to pay around $1k for a used 5-spd unit. these aren't cheap in the junkyards.

there are a few on car-part.com from $500-$1500. Some with only a little more than 100K miles.

Thanks guys.

Well, the shop is going to be tearing it down today. And, yes indeed, it was run nearly dry of oil. I made the mistake of using Jiffy Lube for oil changes (I know I should do it myself, I'm lazy. I do it now.)They assured me they checked the transmission fluid level as part of their service.

One day a few months ago the tranny started whining. I took it to a transmission shop and they discovered that it was a quart and a half low. I got a few more months out of it, but it finally gave up the ghost the other night.

I found a rebuilt from mantrans.com for $1375. That might be a good deal if used ones are so high.

Joe

I know this from experiance , I just replaced my trans also. Think about this... if you buy used you are getting someone elses problem , it may last a good while but then again it may not .Then you find yourself in the same situation without a warranty, AND out $1500 bucks. If you rebuild, the problem WILL present itself again and you are still out the cash it took to rebuild/labor,etc.On the other hand...If you get a NEW one you not only get the warranty, but PEACE OF MIND in knowing that the thing will work for years to come .It may be a little more espensive, but well worth the $$. I know money plays a big roll in your decision, as it did mine...take the time to review all of your options and give Jerry Lemond a call. He is a former Isuzu tech INSTRUCTOR, and knows just about everything to know about Isuzus. He helped me out a lot. He will be able to steer you in the right direction whatever you decide to do. I opted to go with new and he was able to get me a brand new, not rebuilt, transmission/transfer case at a fraction of the cost it would have been ANYWHERE else. You can PM him from this site(JLEMOND) or E-mail him @ JLEMOND@BELLSOUTH.NET. This guy is GOLDEN, good people, and I know he will be able to help you. I hope the problem is minor and you don't have to get another trans... but if you do Jerry is the go to guy. You can send me a PM to get the details, and his telephone#. If you have any questions also, PM me and I will give you all the info on this I got on my search for the trans. Good luck
