Yep, I have the chain-drive case even though it's a 22RE <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="images/icons/frown.gif" /> I think the ADD requires it. I didn't realize it hung down THAT much lower, 1.7"! No wonder I got high centered in the snow so much this winter <img border="0" alt="[Nerd]" title="" src="graemlins/nerd.gif" /> Maybe it'll be worth it to find a different trans and case, even if it's not a turbo version.

Bud, moving to NC for better wheelin'?

As to why, it has to do with the ADD specificly allowing you to shift on the fly while moving, which was one of the big selling points of ADD. The chain driven case was combined with ADD because it could be shifted into 4WD at speed much smoother and more reliably than the gear driven T-case.

I learn something new every day.

rack and pinion steering = better feel, but weaker.
recirculating ball = numb feel, but strong (1st gen toyota has recirc ball)
chain driven transfer = shift on fly, but weaker.
gear driven transfer = stop'n'shift, but stronger (1st gen toyota has gear driven).

Gotta love that 1st gen strength...

By the way, just to bring this back to the post topic: Bud, I'd love it if you made a crossmember that tucked up inside more (similar to maybe rockstomper?), except that ALSO WORKED FOR IFS. I realize those torsion bars are a pain to work around for between-the-framerail work, but I hafta believe someone can get clever enough to make a simple design that fits. Maybe on top of the rails? I have a body lift, so there's some room to work maybe...

You can still shift a geared driven T-case into and out of 4WD while moving, but the hubs have to be locked so that the front and rear shafts are turning at the same speed and it's not nearly as smooth. The chain driven cases can shifted easier at higher speeds as well.

FWIW, the gear driven will also shift on the fly if the hubs are locked, its just a little notchier sometimes. I have heard that marginally better fuel mileage has something to do with the use of chain tcases but can't confirm this.
