Need a Spot
i am going to buy a used wrangler to drive to work. i drive 10 miles on interstate highway,10 miles on curvy mountain blacktop, and 7 miles of rough 4wheel drive mountain road.i am familiar with the old 258 6 cyl. that i had in my old 76 cj5. i dont know much about the 4 cyl engine that is in the newer wranglers. any help or advice would be appreicated. the jeep that i buy will be subjected to rough, muddy, steep, rocky conditions 6 days a week. (this is just 1 way!) will a 4cyl hold up to this kind of abuse or should i get a 6cyl.? thank you.

78 F-250 4x4 that I bought new, 76 CJ5 I should never have sold. 00 F-250 4x4, 95 Wrangler, Caterpillar 777C off road mining truck that I drive for a living.

i think the 4 banger will do all that u want. if u getting a 6 i would get post 90 so u can get a fuel injected one. if it were me i would go with the 6 just to have a little more power. this way if u decide to put some slightly bigger tires or what not you have more power. i am sure some of the other guys with more experience with the 4's will help out too. and btw where do u live? i like that daily commute i am jelous.

what exactly are your options? i HATE the 4.2 i would only take it in 87-88 because the 2.5 only had 83 HP after that the 2.5 has more HP than the 4.2. even though the 4.2 had more tourq, they would tie in a drag race, and the 2.5 would be much nicer to drive. of course if you had the choice of a 91+ 4.0 get that.

Tell ya what I'd do! I'd test drive one of each to work and back.. I'd almost betcha right now that you keep the Jeep with the 4.0 and automatic! That would be my first choice to start off,

I'm sure you know already that any Wrangler is going to pall in comparison to your F-250 4x4 . . . but the Wrangler will be a lot more fun to wheel! Definitely get the 4.0L fuel injected engine; the older Jeep engines are a PITA, and the 4.0L is going to much torque-r than the 2.5L engine. The TJ, 97 to present Wranglers, are suppose to be more resistant to electrical problems from washing down the interior than the YJ, but having never done this to either, I don't know if this is true. This may be a consideration due to your type of work site . . . I suspect you see a lot of mud.

my YJ will sputter if i hit big puddles at high speed. i found that you have to silicon the breather closed and then silicon the cap on. if you do it right, you can hit the biggest puddles you want.
