This last week, my 91 4Runners transfer case stopped me dead in the road. I was in 4hi, and driving 20mph in 2" of snow, then the car skidded to a stop. I shifted to 2hi, and it drove fine (except for no traction because of the snow) but in 4hi or 4lo, the car wouldnt budge. A year and a half ago, the transfer case let go, and stopped me in the road, but that time the tranfer case acted like it was in neutral. The shop that repaired it said something had to be welded in the case, but I didnt see first hand what exactly needed welding. So the question is- Are the Toyota transfer cases crap, or is there an upgrade that can be done to mine? I wanted a reliable vehicle, but this is working out to be frustrating to say the least.
