On that note, the remote starter unit/security system that my brother and I just installed in my Montero has one of many functions that allows you to program it to automatically leave your engine running after you take the key out to cool the oil if you have a turbo. Its called a turbo timer and you can set it from one minute to twenty minutes. I sometimes use it just to leave my Montero running with the heat on while I go in a store quick or something.

Mine turns black after a few hundred miles and I use 1/2 quart every 500 miles but I have 182,000. I'm using castrol 20-50 and a vavoline oil treatment now and then.

I think next year will be quality rebuild time

Are you letting the motor idle several seconds before shutdown? This is necessary to allow the turbo to cool and avoid oil coking in the hot center section. Even with that precaution, the oil cokes some, which is why you change the oil religiously at 2.5-3k mi on a turbo.

I agree 150%, I used to work on Mistu cars for an small shop that "specialized" in Land rover, Jaguar, Mercedes, BMW, and Mistubishi. Anyway, I replaced the turbos on several eclipses and two 3000GT VR4s. The problem was the use of cheap bulk oils, and not letting oil temps lower before shutdown. The oil would sludge in the drainback tube to the pan. Once the sludge would restrict the tube so far, the seals in the turbo would blow, causing a James Bond smoke screen effect. And just as fast, the catalytic convertors would stop up. Can you say,[color:"red"] catastrophic failure [/color] ?
And expensive.
The sythetics out there are good in this case as they do not create mineral deposits like dino. This helps but not cures the coking. I use it in my non-turbo and I change it just like dino, every 3mo/3k mi.
I recommended it to the people that owned turbos and I never had a failure with it. Knock on wood. Synthetics are not a cure all. People treat them as such, and get a bad attitude about them when things fail. Will synthetic blacken in this case? Yes. Like I said, it helps, but not cures the problem. If you change your dino often enough it will be fine too.

My $0.02 - pay the $20 + shipping. Have the oil analysis done. Run your rig at -least- 30 seconds (pref 1min+) at idle before shut down. This, as others have stated will allow that hot turbo to cool a bit. BTW - an aftermarket stereo helps with this - cool down and tune in, etc...

You'll feel better, I imagine when the oil analysis comes in. Sooty oil (or quickly very black oil) can mean a few things. 1. you have a diesel engine (you don't). 2. you have badly worn rings and you're blowing combustion products (including smoked oil) into the pan. 3. you have cheap oil or 4. you have a turbocharger. There can be other reasons like VERY bad fuel and poor oil circulation to name a few, but... I think you're OK.

Pull the dipstick - rub the oil between your fingers. If the oil feels nice and slick for a good 20+ rubs between your thumb and forefinger you're probably ok. If it starts getting 'sticky' or feeling like it's not lubricating any more? Then you might have a problem. This sure is subjective and nowhere near 100%, however it'll tell you if you're breaking down your oil - because if you are it'll stick quickly.

All good responses and much appreciated. I am religous about letting the engine idle before shutting down also I normally ease into home/work so I don't have a super hot engine when pulling in. The oil still feels fine and no sludge or build up, what with only 4k of driving.

Good 'nuff. Make double-dang sure your oil is turbo rated. It oughtta be a stand-out published feature on the bottles of oil you buy.

I really don't know what kind of lubrication system turbos on this engine use - however as a general rule a forced-induction engine is going to be harder on oil than natural aspiration.

I think I'm going to switch back to mobil one after the reassembly, sometime next year.

Break it in on dino first. Break in is one of the things synth is not better for. Swap it to synth oil at 1k. Turbo timers are nice, and not too expensive. I made one years ago (Olds StarFire turbo - a '62 maybe?) with a twist it timing switch and a (porno warning) self excited relay.
