Hi guys, I have a few questions for all you jeep savvy. I just bought a 95' grand with the 4.0 100,000 miles. My first question is, when I'm driving along and then completely let off of the gas I here a faint clunk underneath not real loud but audiable. I'm thinking u joints but which? front axle? or front or rear driveline? it sounds much more like up front. However one would think when you get back on the gas it would clunk again also, if it were u joints, but it doesnt do that, just when I let off. Maybe I just answered my own question, but ideas would help. Also it has the select trac transfer case which is an NP??? which means even in two wheel drive the front drive line is spinning and putting power to the front diff, just not out the hubs right?? Maybe I should brush up on how the hell my 4wd works?? So thats it thanks in advance.

Welcome to Jeeps.
I would just crawl under the jeep and check the rear drive shaft for any lose play in it, I am sure your front u-joints are ok. Look at the exhaust pipe mounting points also, maybe busted alowing the pipe to bounce making a clunking sound.

Damn jeeps with there smooth o matic and craft matic 4wd systems <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" /> no I'm kidding I love it so far, friends jeeps have easily proven themselves with me, its just not like my toyota turn the hubs and then choose hi or lo, but I just need to spend some more time and get familiar with the jeep, and their transfer cases and axles and such. Thanks.

'95 selec-trac is the NP242, you should have 2hi, 4 full time, 4 part time and 4lo. i wouldn't worry too much about the clunk as long as you've been keeping up with the regular maintainance.

the control arms on ZJ's love to clunk, wait till you take it offraod. of course if you suspect a bad u joint just crawl under and check with it in nutral and the parking brake set, shouldn't take more than 30 seconds. i beilive your ZJ has a solid nondisconnecty front axle, meaning that the front drivshaft is always spinning. when in 2wd there should be absolutly no power being tranfered through it though.
