I was wondering if anyone could comment on the 2.7 four cylinder engine that is in the 2003 4X4 Tacoma. There are a lot of 4 cyl 22RE fans on this site... is this engine an improvement? Looking at buying this truck, or should I go with a V6 on this year?

Either motor found in the Tacoma is a good choice. The 2.7L 4 cylinder makes considerably more power than the 22RE and still gets good mileage. I have not heard about any serious issues with these motors and would not hesitate to buy one.

I would not hesitate to purchase the 4 cylinder. If I were in the market for a Tacoma that is the motor I would be looking for. You can't go wrong with either motor though.

I bought a creampuff 2002 2.7 5sp Extracab 4WD last year with 12K miles. The six is great Im sure, but I do everything I want with the four.
Strickly stop and go driving/around town, I see 19-21. Once out on the freeway though, steady 65-70, I get 23-24, and 50-60, I see 24-25, and these numbers are consistant. I track my mileage with every fillup. Im also a slow starter from stops, and easy on the accelerator.
'02 Taco 4x4 X-cab, joins my '68 Land Cruiser bought back in '70 which is still going strong.

The 4 cyl 2.7l is a tried and true performer.

I echo cctk2's comments. My mileage is almost identical on my '95. I have used it to haul a ton of sand and gravel up a 6% climb for over three miles in 3rd gear at over 40 MPH. It does tend to over heat in summer with those loads, but I think it's a problem with the radiator, which I plan to have checked soon. The 2.7 is nice, and adequate. The 3.4 is nicer, and more adequate. Mileage is not significantly different between them, and the 3.4 timing belt is easier to change, if more often required (90K miles, though I understand the newer designs' service interval is 120K. Check with your dealer). Since the water pump often is near its life at the same time though, you would be in there anyway to change it, so something to consider.

The 2.7 is ok.
Does struggle a bit maintaining 60 or so MPH going up a hill.You gotta push down on the pedal and sometimes hit passing gear in an auto.
The gas mileage between the 2.7 and the 3.4 difference is I believe only 1-2 MPG.
I'd go 3.4L.

The timing belt on 3.4 is easier to change because the 2.7 has a chain..... which may last up too 200K. I have 99 2.7 with supercharger, It had plenty of power for me before SC, but wanted more!! I wouldnt go with the 2.4 yota, but stand behind the 2.7. Is this truck and extended cab? I have standard cab model.
